Food & Entertainment: Best Friends Forever

Food is always at the center of festivities and celebrations. In fact, try and imagine attending a wedding or even a business conference where they serve no food. Boring, right?

Where there is no food, focus, fun, and fellowship is fleeting. This is why food and entertainment have been best friends for so long. Food is the welcomed guest that’s expected to show up early and leave late, because as long as it’s there, a good time is always nearby.

Food often lightens the mood while giving our hands and mouth something fun to do. When we attend functions, conversation and laughter are often shared at the buffet or dinner table. As a matter of fact, food is always present at places of entertainment.

Think about it: There’s a concession stand at movies, fairs, and games. Bars and clubs appear to be no exception either. In addition, the fact that restaurants are in the top places people go to celebrate says a lot about the relationship between entertainment and food. There’s a restaurant for every culture and cuisine, that way every palate is catered to.

Even more, food and entertainment maintain their friendship in “less-than-celebratory” moments as well. If we’re bored, sad, or lonely at home, we reach for a snack—and it’s never the good kind. It’s usually something sinfully bad–like a bag of chips or chocolate covered anything! And if we’re on a date or at a function that fails to hold our interest, food becomes our entertainment of choice. The duo is even making a bang on television. With TV shows such as Chopped, Guy’s Grocery Games, and America’s Worst Cooks, we can get our food-fix and enjoyment in one place, right from our sofa–while munching on our favorite goodies.

In the end, regardless of how attached these food and entertainment are, let’s be careful and mindful of what we put into our mouths. Entertainment can act as a distraction that leads to mindless eating. This type of eating only leads to extra pounds and unwanted doctor visits. By all means, eat and have fun. But make healthy choices, use moderation, and practice self-control.

“If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.” (Proverbs 25:16)
