The Benham Brothers May Be “Flipping” To Another Channel
By John Livingston Clark
David and Jason Benham are still in the public spotlight because the American public continues to make its voice heard in reference to the cancellation of the twins’ show, “Flip It Forward,” on HGTV. The network has been harshly criticized for their discrimination based upon comments the pair made regarding same-sex marriage and homosexuality. Many people have spoken out against this action ever since the show was cancelled, which was scheduled to debut in October. The show was to be focused on helping potential home buyers purchase homes they could otherwise not afford.
“Faith Driven Consumer” is an advocate for 46 million consumers who spend $1.75 trillion annually. The organization has launched a campaign called “#Flip This Decision” in hopes of getting the show reinstated, though it may be on a different network. The organization’s Chris Stone said, “…This is pure intolerance, discrimination, and bullying toward those who hold widely held and legitimate views. Whether people agree or disagree with the Benham’s faith-driven perspective is beside the point; the Benham’s have a right to have their views and to be treated equally with those who hold to other viewpoints. This is the very definition of tolerance.” The campaign was officially launched on May 8 and by the next day already had 10,000 registered signatures. Any television viewers that want to become part of this effort can do so by signing on to “FlipThisDecision.com.”
As of May 10 there is another network interested in airing the show. Whatever channel it is on, it is expected to be a huge hit for home buyers. If that holds true the big loser will be HGTV, and that’s the way it should be for any person or organization that practices outright discrimination. The biggest winner will be the American public in their battle with the media. Christians and others who believe in traditional and conservative values have had enough bashing. They are not going to sit down and remain silent any longer. They are standing up and making some noise. Hopefully, that noise will resonate into the profit margin and viewership of HGTV. “Flip It Forward” may still air on a different network; we will just have to wait and see.
The Benham brothers, through all of this, have boldly spoken out about their faith and convictions. David said, “The real issue at hand here is there is an agenda that seeks to silence men and women of faith, if we want to voice our beliefs or voice our views…” They have been a great example in not only speaking out but handling this whole scenario with Godly grace. I believe they have given this nation a picture of what true Christians are made of.
