Church Sisters, Dress with Your Church Brothers in Mind

Males are attracted to females. That’s just how God created them. Our church brothers’ innate attraction to the opposite sex does not die, just because they are sitting in church. So ladies, the least we can do is dress with our church brothers in mind. We are all responsible for our actions, and we will have to give an account for our sins—this is indisputable. But women of God can help out their church brothers by dressing appropriately to reduce their chance of lusting. 1 Corinthians 8:13 says, “Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.” Sisters, if you know that what you wear to church will cause your brothers to stumble, would you make a change?

What you wear really does have the potential to make a brother fall. Though it’s possible, its hard work for most Christian men to remain focused on church service, when they are being distracted by an abundance of cleavage revealed by low-cut neckline and thighs revealed by high-rising skirts. Let’s be realistic, even the strongest Christian man will look. Body-hugging clothes really should have no place in church. Regardless of your body type, whether you have an hourglass figure or are pear-shaped, make an effort to accentuate without overdoing. The focus shouldn’t be on your outfit, but on worshiping God instead.

Modesty is key. As a rule, when getting dressed for church in the mornings, avoid clothing with plunging necklines, that’s too short or tight. Ensure you’re not revealing too much skin. Always dress comfortably. When in church, you don’t want to be worrying about your tummy being on display when you lift your hands in praise to God, or on ripping a seam when kneeling to pray. Be mindful when you’re in God’s house. We ought to reverence not only Him, but His sanctuary as well—particularly the pulpit.

If we make a conscious effort to dress appropriately for church, then we’ll automatically be helping out our church brothers. We cannot stop them from lusting, but we can reduce the temptation by dressing modestly. Men, you’re not off the hook. This article isn’t a free-pass for ogling. Christian men must be able to practice self-control, especially since outside of the church, they still have to deal with how women carry themselves. Nevertheless, church sisters must realize what they wear to church has the power to distract and mislead church brothers.

Share your opinion; describe how the way church sisters dress can affect church brothers’ spiritual growth?

  1. Great article, Amelia. Yes, I Timothy 2:9 says, “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly…” This is especially true if a woman is up on stage for any reason.

  2. Thank you John, your comments are always appreciated.

  3. Great Article! Christian women, please let us be mindful of how we dress and that men are attracted visually. We can still present ourselves as attractive and as ladies by not wearing seducing and revealing clothing.
