Fearing God and Understanding His Jealousy

There are a couple issues that seem to often confuse and discourage people in regards to God Almighty and His ways. I’m talking about God’s JEALOUSY, and why we are to FEAR Him. A proper understanding of God’s LOVE is the key. The Lord always seems to allow us to know more of Him and His ways through extremely creative and unique circumstances that quite often show up as turmoil, chaos and heartache in our lives. During a challenging time in my life a while back these truths were illuminated with this Bible verse:

“And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” – ‭Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭18-19‬

Did you ever see the video of Oprah talking about how the idea of God being jealous “didn’t feel right in her spirit” and how that caused her to abandon her traditional Christian viewpoint in exchange for a universalist new age belief? What a dangerous deception the devil pulled on her.  Second Thessalonians 2:11 says that when someone rejects the Truth of God’s LOVE demonstrated through sending His son Jesus to die for us that: “for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie … “.

What Oprah and every new age thinker fails to understand is that God is JEALOUS because of how much He loves us and doesn’t want us to give our love to false gods and imagined idols. What creator wouldn’t want their creation to give credit where credit is due? Maybe this has a little something to do with our instruction to honor our mother and father as well. If you are interested in reading more about the dangerous teachings of new age gurus like Oprah and Eckhart Tolle, read this article HERE. There are tons of verses in the Bible warning against false teachers but this one will suffice:

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.” – Romans 16:17-18

Let’s be real honest and have some common sense in regards to this matter. We all need to understand that attending church is FREE, reading the Bible is FREE and receiving the gift of salvation is FREE! If all these so-called spiritual teachers stuck to the complete truth, who would buy their books and tapes or attend their seminars?  Hmmm … food for thought.

Over a year and a half ago I was able to peer into God’s heart and mind on this subject through my precious son Isaac. Hearing him refer to his step-father as “Daddy” while he was being taught to refer to me by my first name, filled me with an anger and heartbreak words cannot describe. Now I know there are “mothers” and “fathers” who love their step-children as their own, and there are plenty of biological parents whose actions don’t justify even being referred to by that title, but for me that is not the case.  I know that no matter what a great step-father my son has, his love for my son is in no way equal or greater to my love for him. What this extremely challenging situation taught me is the simple and profound truth that God’s love for us is far greater than any earthly love we will ever experience, and he is JEALOUS for the reciprocation of that LOVE!

Now in regards to why we are to FEAR God, Psalm 111:10 says: The fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This “fear” of God is another area that doesn’t “feel right” with many people who lack an understanding of the ways of the amazing God we serve. I know this rubbed me the wrong way for a long time, especially at the beginning of my walk with Him. I thought “I know I should LOVE God, but why should I FEAR Him?”

We are supposed to fear God out of a reverence for Him. Reverence means to have deep respect for; admiration, honor or appreciation. Just as we honor and wish to make our earthly fathers proud, we should even more so honor and wish to make our Heavenly Father proud.

If you were lucky enough to have an earthly father that was a strong disciplinarian and lovingly corrected you when you did the wrong thing, how much more will your Heavenly Father do the same? If you are old enough to have grown up getting spankings, corporal punishment in school or “whoopins” as they are often called, you know what it was to FEAR your father or whoever was giving them! I know I was most scared of my grandfather as a child, you only made him mad once, then you learned to shape up real quick!

Proverbs 3:12 says: “For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.”

Also see Hebrews 12:6-11, to hopefully change the way you view pain, challenges and obstacles in your life. These “corrections” contain the greatest opportunity for blessings if we heed the lesson and make the adjustments the Lord wishes us to make.

God’s LOVE is the easiest to understand with the world’s most famous Bible verse that sums it up in one single sentence:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16

This is not about RELIGION, this is about a RELATIONSHIP with the one who created you. Are you ready to start nurturing the only relationship that truly matters? Did any of this shine some light on God’s jealousy and how His love never fails?

Why do you think we should fear God?

About Jason Herrington

After spending fifteen years of his life aggressively pursing financial success in various business endeavors, Jason became disillusioned with what was being taught by the success “experts.” After many years searching for answers amongst new-age teachings, the mystical, the occult, and other spiritual practices, he found that nothing made a lasting difference in his life–which was becoming increasingly confusing and wrought with hardship. No matter how hard he worked he was left with more problems and questions. Then, a few years later he found the one solution that would change his life forever–giving his life to Jesus Christ.

Once a strong skeptic and opponent of Christianity, now Jason is completely in awe of the God who, in His mercy, still made Himself known to him, despite his aversion. Now he is passionate and committed to searching for answers exclusively from God’s Word. His ministry seeks to target any and all individuals attracted to the success and personal development industry, as well as the new age movement, and deliver God’s truth.
