Holy Spirit, I Need You

‘But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.’ John 14:26

Jesus was leaving. He was going to be with His Father in Heaven. He was leaving behind those who depended on Him completely, for every thing. But He would not leave them alone.

The Holy Spirit of God was sent to us as well. He was intended for all mankind, all who believed on Jesus Christ. He is a leader, a guide. He pokes us, reminds us, gives us pause. He reminds us of Scripture, of God’s promises, of what Jesus did on the cross, and more.

Jesus knew that without a guide, without someone to encourage and teach, and reprove them, the disciples would have a difficult road to walk. The attacks they would face, the sin that was around them, and the hardships of continuing His ministry, could lead them to fail, to give up, and yes, to abandon the cause. It wasn’t that He thought they were faithless…He just knew they were men. And men can be defeated in life. Jesus knew a better way than to leave them on their own.

The Holy Spirit has very important purposes. He comes and lives within us when we accept Jesus as our Savior, when we are born again. And He will live within us till our physical bodies die. Because He does this, we are truly never alone, never left hopeless, never abandoned. However, because of free will, we can choose to not listen to Him. Yes, we can ignore Him. He will do His nudges, He will even whisper to our hearts. He will not force us to listen. It is up to us to decide to listen to Him or not.

Today, more than ever, we need Him. While at one time watching the nightly news was merely a way to keep up with the times, now it literally can put fear in our hearts. We see governments that have become overbearing. We hear about murders, and inhumane treatment of people and animals. We see the pictures of the hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes. And always there is the spector of war, all over the globe. Without the Holy Spirit, how could we go on with our lives without living in perpetual fear and dread? We would live without any real purpose. We would be wandering, trying to find our place. We need the constant reassurance and peace that will come when we trust the Holy Spirit to calm our souls.

The Holy Spirit will provide wisdom and strength when we need them.  If we ask Him, He will help us remember to treat others with dignity and respect. He will prompt us to share a kind word, a pat on the back, or to pray for someone who is hurting. Often we don’t know how to pray, but the Holy Spirit  will pray for us, and teach us how to pray along the way. He is our constant companion, and we really do need Him.

We can talk to Him, share with Him, and cry with Him. He will understand.  He is God, and He is, above all things, holy. And He expects us to live holy. He teaches us to do so. Yet He knows who we are, and He knows our failings. He is indeed God. And God loves us beyond what we can ever imagine. What a great and mighty gift Jesus gave us when He sent the Holy Spirit to us. We must never be afraid to say, ‘Holy Spirit, I need you.’ For we do. We really do.

‘The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.’ Isaiah 11:2

Blessings!
