How Do I Know God’s Will?

By Joel B.

John 10:27-30 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.

Many people struggle with wondering what God’s will is for their life. What is His call for them? Are they on the right path? Do they need to be doing anything different? These are all good questions, and I would suggest that they can be dealt with from a biblical perspective.

In John 10, Jesus is introduced as the Good Shepherd. We are told that His sheep hear His voice and will follow Him. So clearly we are told that we can hear God and know His will. If we couldn’t, how else could we follow Him?

The answer to this question is actually pretty simple. You just have faith in God and live within a biblical framework, because the Holy Bible is God’s divine voice to us. As long as you’re following that framework, you will have structure which of course leads to stability.

Now you may think that I’m just giving you an easy answer. And you’re right. I was giving you an easy answer, but it was a true answer. However I am not done yet. Lets use that biblical framework I talked about to hear God’s voice on this matter even further.

Heb 12:12 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Are you seeing where I am going with this? Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. You see, if you’re in the biblical framework, this gives Jesus what He needs to author and complete your faith. So when we’re allowing Jesus to author our faith things must become clear. And lets look at a verse that drives this point home:

1 Cor 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

So, Jesus is the author of our faith, and He is not the author of confusion. Wow. So you’re guaranteed authorship of your faith by the Master if you simply live within a biblical framework. And when you do this, God will surely reveal His will to you in His timing since it is His responsibility to author your faith without confusion.

Now, don’t blame God if you work against Him. He may not author confusion, but you can author confusion within your own life. Simply step outside that biblical framework, and into what James 1:8 refers to as being double-minded. The double-minded man or woman is unstable in all their ways.

So my friends, lets stay connected with biblical teaching. Lets not only read the Holy Bible, but share in fellowship through devotions with others. Lets also encourage one another to get on track when we see them start to spiral out of control. Most importantly, always trust in the Good Shepherd and know that He loves and cares about you. Lets love him back and listen to His voice. Thank you for reading and God bless.

  1. You are so right, Joel. We do not have to be confused about God’s will. He will make it plain to us if we are in His Word consistently, waiting upon and delighting ourselves in Him, and going through the doors that He opens for us to use our gifts.

  2. Joel, I really like the point you made about John 10:10. I’ve never really thought about it that way before. Good for pondering and applying.
