Is There Really Only One Way?

Walk down the health and beauty aisle, or actually any aisle in a supermarket, and chances are there is more than one option for the item you are searching for.

Peruse through the viewing options on Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube and you should be able to find something to entertain you.

Due for an upgrade on your laptop, tablet, or cell phone, there is definitely more than one choice when it comes to technology candies.

If we can’t find what we are looking for, we either complain until we have it our way or wait until the next version comes along which is typically not that far.

Maybe that’s why when it comes to Christianity, people automatically turn away and assume that Christians are being narrow minded because we believe that there is only one choice, one truth, one way that that leads to eternal life, and the idea of only having one option cannot seem possible when living in a multiple choice world.

During his ministry, Jesus had several followers and of those, there were even fewer who had the privilege to grow close to him, yet even the ones who spent almost every waking hour with him had doubts of their own. Take Thomas for example, who questioned Jesus after hearing that he would be leaving soon, yet his disciples did not know the way to find him. “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus replied, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:5-6)

Jesus informs Thomas and the others that there is only one way into heaven, the place he was just referring to, and that the only way is through a relationship with Jesus.

Philip, another apostle during the same conversation needed assurance for his own questions. “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.  (John 14:8-10)

Jesus does not say that there are multiple ways and people who hold the entrance to heaven, but only one way-through God the father, and by knowing Jesus, you know the Father.

Having only one way to eternity is not an easy idea to accept when you live in a multiplistic world, yet God knew that life alone was complicated enough, so why make the pathway home difficult? The biggest challenge comes from letting go of your own life and allowing God to live it for you.

What holds you back from making the decision to follow Christ today? What questions can we answer to help you along your journey of searching for the meaning of truth?
