Just a Girl and Her Heart

By Renee G.

The other day as I was hanging out with a few moms from church, I sat watching some of our kids play, and I started thinking what life might have been like for Mary.  Do you think that the other moms were jealous of her perfect son?  After all, Jesus understood what it meant to obey-even unto death.

Did she feel left out and hurt with comments such as “Isn’t Mary the perfect little mamma.”  Or “Look at little Miss God’s chosen mother.  Isn’t she special?” Do you wonder if she ever felt alone or if her husband could even begin to understand the humiliation she had to overcome?  What about the pressure she faced in meeting the needs of her son.  No wait, God’s son.   Can you even begin to imagine the weight placed upon her?  Yet, she answered the call.

Are you curious if Mary went through the same emotions a mom would go through when her son was hurt, beaten, bruised, hanging on a cross, helpless only to watch as the beautiful boy she tucked in every night with all of her love and fought so hard to protect was ripped to shreds in front of her eyes.

What about the despair she felt when words were not enough to even ask Why God? I just don’t understand why? Or how about the joy that emanated through her body to hear the words He is alive!  Can you even fathom the emotional roller coaster ride she took?

All of my questioning led to me understand that Mary was just Mary.  She wasn’t a fancy rich girl who had it all together.  She didn’t win the Mother of the Year Award.  She didn’t even get an all inclusive hospital stay.  She was just a simple girl whom God found favor with because He saw her heart, but most importantly, she answered the call immediately from God. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38) and she praised him for choosing to use her just as she was.   “And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.’” (Luke 1:46).

So I ask you. What about you?  If God chose to use Mary, why would he not ch0ose you?  All you have to do is say “Yes Lord.  Here I am.”

  1. Very nice article. 🙂 Makes me think of the song we typically hear around Christmas, “Mary Did You Know.”

  2. Great article, Renee. This is a message that is overlooked at Christmas. We should all have the attitude of Mary. What a privilege of being part of a family of talented writers. John
