Overcoming Heavy Temptations

By Joel B.

1 Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

The Lord always gives us a means of escape no matter how heavy a temptation may be. I’ve asked the Lord many times why He allows for me to be so heavily tempted at times, and just recently He gave me a very simple and clear answer. You see, the heavy temptations we are allowed to experience cause the enemy to be exposed. If they weren’t heavy, we would more than likely think nothing of them and be hypnotized by them.

I ask you my friends, isn’t this true? Isn’t it the things we think little of that that ensnare us the most? It may be things such as unclean music, R-rated movies, or the company we keep. Often these things have an impact on us and how we respond to the world around us. We may find ourselves imitating a line from a song we heard with some filthy lyrics because we were subtly introduced to it or going along with a bad idea just because our friends are doing it.

Now lets get to the part about overcoming heavy temptations. This is how you do it. You do exactly as the Holy Bible instructs. First, you put on the full armor of God that Paul talks about in Eph 6. This will protect you from attacks from the enemy and allow you to push forward. Next, you begin replacing the areas of heavy temptation with the things of God. This should include doing devotions, participating in fellowship with others, and seeking what the Holy Spirit has to offer you. Finally, you resist, because as James 4:7 tells us, this causes the devil to flee.

So next time you’re feeling tempted, don’t let it get you down or force you to submit to it. Just follow the suggestions listed in this article, and if you’re still feeling overwhelmed, send a prayer request to our website and we’ll be happy to assist you. We know the battle can be tough, but our God is omnipotent and loves us very much. He cares about the temptations you experience and wants you to live a healthy life. Have faith, stay strong, and don’t be afraid to fight back. God bless.

  1. Great article, Joel. Being aware that spiritual warfare exists is the first step at stopping the temptation in it’s tracks. No one is exempt from the devil’s lures. He attacks even the strongest of Christians. Thank you for confronting this issue.

    • Absolutely! And when you get rid of the “garbage” you have to replace it with heavenly things or it will return in greater numbers. We are warned about this in Matt 12:43-45

  2. Great article, one everyone can relate to! I once heard it said that if you don’t feed something, it will die…we must not feed our temptations by giving in over and over. Easier said than done, but God helps and we get stronger each time we resist!

    • Good insight. There are three powerful words Jesus gave us that I’m sure many of us know that will repel any demonic parasites that attempt to attack us and they are “It is written…” This is because demonic hosts cannot argue with God’s Word as it is Perfect and Final. It is also talked about in the Holy Bible as being a powerful weapon.

Heb 4:12 For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
