Today countless Americans around the country BBQ with friends and family, attend parades, shoot fireworks and celebrate our countries official independence from British rule for the 239th year. While countless people will be celebrating today with pomp and circumstance I think the true patriots today are expressing their feelings for America with the internet acronym “SMH.” (shaking my head) Why? because I think anyone who truly loves America and what it originally stood for would know that today the original signers of the Declaration of Independence would be deeply grieved by the degradation of our once great country and completely appalled by what it has become.
The day before it was approved John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail about this “most memorable epoch in the history of America” by saying that “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” But where exactly is the devotion to God Almighty in America today? Today America is a country that has almost completely turned it’s back on God and is doing everything within its’ power to drive God out of every facet of our society. I wrote an article almost a year ago title “In GOD We Trusted,” and if I attempted to write the same article today the list of moral and despicable horrors perpetrated in our once great country could have easily added an extra couple thousand words to the post.
As everyone engages in their 4th of July festivities, it’s hard for me not to reflect back to 13 years ago when I first saw my old mentor portray George Washington and talk about the parallels between the moral decline of America and the decline of the Roman empire before it’s demise. I didn’t really pay attention to politics or current events then, but as I’ve drawn closer to God the increasingly rapid decline of the United States has become more and more apparent. Today I think the words the Lord spoke to the prophet Zechariah are about as relevant as ever:
Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Return to Me,” says the Lord of hosts, “and I will return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets preached, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds.”’ But they did not hear nor heed Me,” says the Lord. – Zechariah 1:3-4
Our country which once stood for a staunch adherence to Biblical values and ideals has now become increasingly malleable and “progressive” in their stance of what is considered morally acceptable.
I shared a blog about the implications of the same-sex marriage issue a few days ago and a Catholic friend commented “There are many gay couples that capture the Spirit of the Sacrament in ways that I am inspired by.” I replied by saying “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”
Just because there are gay couples that might outwardly express their “love” in ways that might SEEM full of grace and sacrificial love compared to many of the broken heterosexual relationships you see everywhere, doesn’t mean there isn’t a deep underlying problem. In the same way a pedophile or murderer might help an old-lady with her groceries or help a fellow citizen pick up a stack of books they dropped in passing. While that might be a noble thing to do, it doesn’t mean that person isn’t deeply broken in their life of sin and corruption.
The truth is I believe most of the gay people today don’t even understand the evil agenda behind their so-called “civil rights movement.” They are just puppets on a string being used by the god of this world. The darkness has so enveloped our country that we call evil good and good evil. Even Christians want to pull the “judge not” card out when another Christian speaks out on the LGBT topic and has the audacity to compare equal rights of African-Americans and women in the past to the perversions that have just happened in our country legalizing gay marriage. The people of America need to make a choice, do we hold fast to the ideals that allowed our country to rise to its former greatness and glory by honoring God above all else? Or do we “change with the times” and destroy every ounce of greatness and ourselves along with it?
I just read an amazing article about this and the author defined greatness in a way that we all need to think about today:
“And what makes a nation great anyway? I’d say economic status plays some small part in it, liberties are important, the way the government functions, laws, industries, military — all of these are factors. But I’ll tell you this: In the end, the nation that sends the most people to heaven is the greatest. Period.”
So before you spend the next 24 hours celebrating how amazing America is, why don’t you read the all links I provided here and really think about them. Most importantly think about the challenges this article makes at the end and what you and your family can do to partake in restoring America to greatness. Also keep in mind that the more of us that unite in prayer and worship of our Lord, praise His glorious Name and dwell in His presence, the better chance we have of God intervening and having mercy on us for what we have allowed this country to become.
“Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your name;
The upright shall dwell in Your presence.” – Psalm 140:13
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” – Psalm 91:1
I can’t really ask God to bless America today, but instead ask that God will have mercy on us. Will you take some time to dwell in God’s presence today and pray for His mercy and the restoration of America?
