Whose Report Will You Believe?

I recently made a decision, based on God’s leading, which did not gain my mother’s approval. It drove me crazy! I love my mother infinity times infinity, so just imagine how distressed I felt knowing we were viewing my choice from a dwarf and giant perspective. Her support is a treasured commodity, that’s why when she disagreed with my decision to relocate, I was disheartened. After much rationalization, her reasons for me to stay started outweighing my reasons to go, compelling me to reconsider.

I almost complied too…

However, during Bible study that day the Lord directed me to John 5:44 which says, “No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God” (NLT). This biblical revelation hit me like a slap upside the head. I then realized that I was seeking approval and favor from those around me, instead of holding fast to God’s leading.

If we truly trust God and believe what He’s speaking over our lives, then we really don’t need the consent of others; even close “Others” such as a mother or a spouse. So be it, if we are the only persons who agree with God’s instructions for our lives. When those around us disagree, we still have to obey the Lord.  He said, “For I know the plans I have for you, they are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT). Take comfort in knowing that God’s plans for our lives are better and much superior to anyone else’s.

I humbly accepted my admonition, and thanked God for His intervention. Peace encompassed me as I revealed to my best friend, who gave birth to me, that I agree to disagree with her. I will always cherish my mother, but when God is driving, I’m riding shotgun–even if it means He and I will be the only ones on the road.

  1. Very well said. God is always going to point us in the right direction. We just have to be willing to listen. It can certainly be hard when a loved one is trying to pull you in a different direction. We just have to be ready to pull back when God demands it. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  2. Great scripture reference! We need to remember this one! I have also struggled with letting my younger daughter decide where she will travel for ministry. She goes to Europe this summer for 6 weeks, so I will remember this message!
