How to Overcome the P.P. Disease

The article previously posted on April 22nd called “P.P. Disease,” presented the dreaded signs and symptoms of being a People-Pleaser. If you have been diagnosed with this malady, don’t feel defeated. Help is available. In the end of the last article, lies the first step. Getting down on your knees to consult the greatest physician is the beginning of the healing process. The choice is yours to admit, but it doesn’t change the fact that we accomplish nothing without God’s grace and blessing.

Now that you’ve accepted the diagnosis, and have humbly sought God’s help, you can proceed to the proceeding steps.

Step 2: Read your Bible and draw strength from it daily. It is filled with the wisdom essential to succeed.

Step 3: Practice positive self-talk in order to boost your self-esteem. Let confident words about yourself—from your voice, be friends with your ears.

Step 4: Recognize that your opinions are just as important as anyone else’s, and you have a right to all of them.

Step 5: Think highly of yourself because you are fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)

Step 6: Admit the fact that everyone will not agree with you…and that’s OK.

Step 7: Accept that it’s acceptable to say “NO.” It does not mean you’re a bad person or a selfish Christian; it means you’re human. And with that limitation, you just can’t do it all.

Step 8: Be yourself, and don’t be afraid of the opinions of others. Remember that the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. (1 John 4:4)

These are they; eight simple steps. However, standing at the foot of a flight of stairs and wishing to be at the top, will not get you there. These steps are no different. Likewise, getting the medication the doctor prescribes and refusing to take it, will not make you better. You have to move and do, only then will your actions yield results.

  1. When you have a clearly defined and focused God-given vision for your life you are less likely to be a people pleaser.

  2. Lord, help us all to identify our “Clearly defined and focused God-given vision” in Jesus’ name. Amen.
