Should Christians Follow What is “Trending Now”?

Once upon a time, being on the cutting edge meant getting updated, useful information. Now, staying on the cutting edge means constantly following and adopting what’s “trending”; this involves anything that’s popular, hot, and well talked about. It doesn’t even have to make sense, nor does it have to be in keeping with high morals and values. Once something is going viral, or everybody seems to be doing it, then it’s trending—and you ought not to be left behind.

While there are a few salmon swimming upstream against the pressure of conformity, the majority seems to be swimming downstream as they blindly follow the tides leading to destruction. Let’s take a look at some of the worldly ways now trending in our nation.

Trending …

Selfies
Self-praise via selfies is now trending. There’s even a gadget for it. When being the center of attention is all you want to be, there’s trouble. The Bible warned about men being lovers of themselves more than God.

Pointless Viral Videos
The internet is filled with irrelevant videos such as grumpy cats, teens jumping off roofs into garbage cans, and countless variations of twerking. Stardom could be a click away for any random individual posting random videos, with the ability to generate enough “Likes.” Don’t worry, the video doesn’t even have to make sense for you to qualify.

Walking Naked
This trend has no boundaries, in more ways than one. No one is left out. Children, teens, adults, male and female, all have some body part or another on display. Be it crop-top blouses or sagging pants—especially if they’re the latest fashion.

Senseless Songs
Not so long ago, songs use to be meaningful; they told stories, or at least we could recognize the words. Now, in a roundabout way, with no real start or end, artists sing about cocaine, alcohol, wasting money, and cult groups or gangs.

Evil Demonic Games
First, it was the Ouija board. Now, the Charlie Challenge is following in hot pursuit. This generation’s fascination with evil spirits and the dead, is beyond me. Yet, so many of them ignore Jesus, the man who tasted death and conquered it.

Terrorist Groups Playing God
Groups like ISIS and Boko Haram, in their reign of terror, have decided to be judge and “Punisher.” The trend of these bullies includes preying on the weak and forcing their religion on others.

Low Standards and Poor Values
Cheating, hurling profanities, teens disrespecting adults, stealing, teenage pregnancy … need I continue?

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come … ” (2 Timothy 3:1-4).

What or who would you recommend today, to break these trends?
