Sex and the Christian Marriage

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 (NIV)

And he [Jesus] said, ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Matthew 19:5 (NLT)

Satan has perverted everything God has created for good and sex is no exception.  God made sex for the marriage relationship only  and He meant it to be something wonderful between a man and his wife to enhance the intimate marriage relationship.  However, it has been twisted in many ways, from the hotly debated issue of one man/one woman to being something dirty and shameful to “free love”.

One of Satan’s tried, true and original tricks is planting the idea that God is holding out on us.  It worked so well on Adam and Eve, he keeps on using it.  God’s just trying to keep you from having a good time; that is his ploy.  Reality is that God, as always when He withholds something, is trying to protect us.  He wanted to protect Adam and Eve from knowing any evil. He wants to protect us from the pain of giving away something precious to someone not worthy and the heartache of wishing we had not, when we find the mate God has made for us.

Then there is the other extreme and the attitude that sex is something wrong and dirty and no one should do it, not even husbands and wives.  This breaks intimacy within a marriage and leads to hurt feelings and feelings of not being loved.  Everyone craves physical touch from another person and while wives enjoy receiving flowers and candy or a card as a sign they are loved, having a sexual relationship with his wife makes a husband feel loved (which is not to say wives don’t see this as an outward sign of love and affection).

The Bible is our ultimate authority on everything, and all we need as a guide to live our lives.  If we adhere to God’s plan and commands, we won’t go wrong.  We should not be swayed by the things of the world and its wisdom.  God is our guide, always and He is always worthy of our trust.  Trust Him and all will be well.  Be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove.
