Immigrant Children Are Hearing About God’s Love

By John Livingston Clark

Immigrant children from Central America have been streaming across the United States southern border by the thousands, seeking a safe haven from the atrocities in their home countries. Some of them have contagious diseases. Amidst all of the political controversy the question has been how should this nation and its people respond to this humanitarian crisis. There are those who say they should be sent back while others take the position that they should be warmly welcomed.

Many organizations, churches, and ministries have wanted to help. People have started saying that we should “open our hearts” to these who have come such a great distance to reach our border. It reminds me of the verse in I John 3:17 from the Bible that states, “But whoever has the world’s goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” Whatever position a person might take on this issue the fact remains that something has to be done. While the government is not dealing with it in a timely manner and many individuals do not know what to do, one man is taking advantage of the opportunity.

Dan Trevino, associate pastor at Baptist Temple in San Antonio, Texas, has seen a dream fulfilled. For decades he has had a heart’s desire to preach to people in Central America. He realized his dream has come to him and sees it as a “divine appointment.” Since many of the immigrant children are being housed at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio he started holding worship services at the base on Palm Sunday and estimates that he has preached to over 10,000 people since that time. The four services which he conducts on Sunday’s and which are totally voluntary, have seen between 1,000 to 1,400 participants from ages 11-17. Three services are for boys and one is for girls. Many stories have been shared from the experiences in their native countries. The greatest thrill for Pastor Trevino, however, has been to witness 2,500 decisions for Jesus Christ.

With all of the news circulating about what is going on at the border God has been at work. Even though the children have come out of horrible conditions and have crossed over the border, they have encountered the cross of Christ. Dan Trevino is encouraging them to eventually take the saving message of salvation in Jesus back to their own people.

  1. This is a profound purpose for what seems like a messy situation. God is working in ways beyond our perception to bring child to Himself through this massive influx of young lives. From some of the stories that is put out there by the media, these children have suffered in many ways already.
It is hard to look beyond ourselves at times. We find it to be a blunder at a great cost to the people of this country who didn’t ask or welcome such a problem in the first place.
We need to look beyond the physical problems to the spiritual needs that we all have in common.
