Sound Mind Vs Tormented Mind

Sound Mind Vs Tormented Mind

By Joel B.

2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Many people suffer from things such as mental illnesses, or simply just stress from seemingly overwhelmingly situations. It is important to realize that when we are aligned properly with God then we are promised a sound mind, so we should not be experiencing a tormented or overwhelmed mind.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when we are out-of-step with God, this also can open doorways to demonic activity which can agitate the situation making the mind feel tormented. Because of this it is necessary to cling to the things of God, especially by putting on the full armor of God, which is listed in Ephesians 6.

When we are in-step with God, we should have a sound mind. We should not feel overwhelmed or feel stressed out. We should trust in the Lord and know that He has plans to prosper us. Lets look at a couple scriptures that make this point:

Matt 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Saul was a good example of someone with promise who got out-of-step with God and he ended up with a tormented mind from an evil spirit. He actually had to have David, who would eventually become king, play the harp for him so that the evil spirit would depart.

1 Sam 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

This would not have happened if Saul would not have intentionally disobeyed the Lord on two occasions (1 Sam 13:1-14, 1 Sam 15:1-35), but this just goes to show what can happen to someone mentally when they do not trust in the Lord.

Friends, God does not want your mind to be tormented. He wants your burden to be light and he wants you to find your strength in Him. If you feel you are being tormented, then I would suggest claiming some of the promises of God. Claim your sound mind, claim your right to prosper, claim your right to freedom from spiritual wickedness, and claim your place as Christ’s royalty. When you start claiming the things of God, you will start to see the things that torment you are much smaller and will begin to fade away. Thank you for reading and God bless.

  1. Heavy stuff very concisely presented. Praying the Spirit directs readers to this!

    • Very heavy stuff. Unfortunately, many underestimate (or dismiss) the evil spirits lying in wait for the opportunity to torment our minds. When we focus on and fill our minds with, the promises of God and praise Him, those tormenting spirits are defeated and must leave. We must desire peace more than we want to stay with what we know – whether it be anxiety, depression or other any other mental issues. Although I don’t believe happiness is a ‘choice.’ I do believe that we must make the choice to actively pursue those things that will drive out those negative thoughts and behaviors that sabotage our peace and our relationship with God.
This is a very deep and complex issue, for more people than we probably realize. We need to always remember to keep those under this type of attack in our prayers. In our world today it seems to be getting worse.
