Wonderfully Made!

Our Creator is an amazing designer! He fashioned each of us uniquely, having our own gifts, talents and abilities–all to be used for His glory. Our lives have immeasurable value to Him, and we live in an amazing body.

The wonder begins long before the day of our birth. Just three weeks after conception, a baby’s spinal cord, brain, heart, and lungs are rapidly developing–and the heart begins the first of around 2.5 billion beats over an average lifetime. It will pump around one million barrels of blood during our life.

God’s “blue print” for our body is our DNA, and it decides everything about us. Passed on equally from both parents, DNA determines our height, bone structure, even our eye and hair color. It determines how our organs will function right down to how our body digests food. It is the “design” of our physical being.

God created our body to fight harmful bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and even its own bad cells. Our immune system has a “memory,” recognizing bacteria and viruses that have invaded in the past and preventing their re-multiplication in our body. But there are several things our body does to protect itself first: tears, skin, cough, even stomach acid, all protect the body from harm and disease. And there is a part of our brain that is our body’s thermostat, and it “resets” itself by moving blood from outer to inner layers of the body to reduce heat loss—this is called fever. Without our immune system, we would not survive.

It is difficult to believe there is no Creator when you consider how wonderfully we are made. With love and care and thoughtfulness for what we would need to survive, God knit each of us together. The Psalmist David was awestruck when he considered God’s wonderful creation, and penned these verses in chapter 139 of the Psalms: “Thank you or making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvelous-and how well I know it. You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion.” (vs. 14-15)

Value and treasure yourself–you were wonderfully made!
