Our Hope: Sing and Make Music

“I will sing and make music with all my soul.”  Psalm 108:1 (NIV)

Do you like to sing? I do! It is a wonderful pastime, and something I enjoy immensely.  I love to play my keyboard or my guitar and just sing, sing, sing.  When we sing for the love of Jesus, something sweet washes over us as we sing.  It is His joy in us, becoming a reality within us as we praise Him in song.

We are not required by the Lord to be consummate musicians.  We only need be willing.  And singing and making music is not the only way to show Him how we love Him.  He gives each of us special gifts.  If you are a gardener, you are probably very talented at growing beautiful flowers, or vegetables, or any number of different types of plant life.  If you are a cook, you may have talent that far surpasses many of us, who struggle just to whip up a decent meal.  Or you may be a superb housekeeper, taking care of your home in ways I could only dream of.  In short, each of us has something we do well, or at least enjoy doing.  And if we do any one of them as to the LORD our God, then we have pleased His heart.

When God handed out gifts, I have heard it said, some of us were evidently hiding behind a door.  That just is not true!  Each and every child of the Lord has been given a measure of talent.  I have also heard it said that some of us don’t know what that talent is.  That IS true!  I have heard that over and over again, and I, myself, have even said it.  Because, you see, just because I love to sing and make music does not mean that I am all that good at it. What it means is that when I use the small measure of talent He has given me, I am honoring Him.

Jesus Christ is the only perfect person to walk upon this earth.  None of us even come close.  But if we will look Him in the face and watch what He does, then we will be able to walk in truth and light, and be the disciples He has called us to be.  We need not worry about our talent; we only need to realize that He has indeed gifted each and every one of us.  If we do not know what our gift is, then we must get up and get out there and begin serving along with other Christians, and soon the talent He has given will show itself.  We may not even realize it, but those who are watching us will.  We may even find we are quite surprised to find out what our gift is, as it may be something far and away from what we would have ever expected.  But Jesus knows, and eventually He will reveal it to us.  He wants us to use it, after all.

So go ahead, sing at the top of your lungs, strum that guitar, beat that drum.  Or paint a picture, or grow a beautiful rose.  Whatever it is you have been gifted with, use it with all your heart.  Show God what you can do with what He has given you.  Don’t boast about it, don’t show off, except for the cause of Christ.

Jesus is Our Hope.  And because He is, we know He has gifted us.  He would not ask us to serve Him and others if He had not made sure we are equipped for the service.  So we must trust Him, and know that He will place us where we will best be able to represent His purposes.  In doing so, He will bring us contentment in our service, and that is worth all the songs we can possibly sing!

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”  1 Peter 4:10

Do you know what your gift is?  Have you been able to use it in His service?  Please comment here or go to www.mystoryofgrace.com and tell us about it.  We want to celebrate with you!

Blessings!
