God’s Love is Better Than Hollywood

Why do you think it is we are willing to subscribe to faith that transcends all understanding, defies all logic, and be willing to surrender our lives to Jesus as our Savior and yet we continue to have a hard time believing that true love is possible this side of heaven?

We look at Hollywood movies and automatically disregard the belief that this could ever happen for us. We’re quick to reject the possibility that two flawed humans can actually be united in a kind of love that defies all logic, transcends understanding and disrupts our belief in what’s possible…and far too many of us settle. Tragic!

If we understand God’s heart and His character, it would be illogical to believe that He would want anything less than the absolute best for us. He created the gift of marriage to be a union of souls that He unites to best represent His great love for us.  It’s the greatest blessing we can experience this side of Heaven.

God wants nothing more than for us to experience a real-life, tangible love that unites, glorifies, and magnifies His grace and love. This is exactly the kind of love that poses the greatest threat to the enemy as we discussed in the previous article, How to Protect Your Relationships from the Enemy. So as long as we have doubt in the possibility of beautiful, perfect love, we’re adopting the lie from the enemy and we’re essentially rejecting His truth. If we adopt this mentality, we are blocking our blessings.

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him- (1 Corinthians 2:9)

God wants something much BETTER than a Hollywood fairytale for us. He wants to bless us beyond comprehension with a companion that will compliment and draw us in closer to His heart. He wants for us to fully submit to His promises and be willing to wait or sacrifice anything and at all costs to hold out for His perfect timing.

Jehovah-Jireh: “The Lord provides.”

Yes, we are given free will to choose our companion. But wouldn’t it be better to completely surrender to His greater plan and trust Him in His perfect time to supply our perfect companion?

Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be renewed by the transforming of your mind. (Romans 12:2)

When we look to the world, it’s easy to see dysfunction and destruction. I see even the most well-meaning and kind-hearted people, (even some Christ followers) in terribly dysfunctional marriages and I’ve watched the pain of divorce unfold before my very eyes.

Then there are a few select marriages that I look up to. I see that God’s hand was at work and it was only by His grace, favor and provision that they are united in love with a God-anointed marriage. These testimonies, although few, inspire great hope!

There is no fear in love, perfect love drives out fear. Fear has to do with punishment. Those who fear do not know love. (1 John 4:18)

I believe the best divorce prevention is heart preparation.

That is truly understanding God’s intention of marriage and being unwilling to settle for anything less. Are you willing to believe for God’s provision and hold out at all costs for Him to supply?

  1. Heather,

What great insight you have given us on this topic. I believe that the Hollywood picture of relationships is very flawed and does not reflect true love, as does our Great God. Hollywood gives an impression that love isn’t to last, but our Lord would certainly have us believe otherwise. Thanks so much for sharing this article. God bless.

    • Isn’t it amazing when we fully understand and embrace His love for us, the boundaries of possibilities break wide open and we can experience a life and a love that far surpasses all understanding?! Of course God wants to supply us with a companion that will allow us to feel unconditional, supportive, honoring and respectful love. We mustn’t settle for anything less!
