On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will make a southwesterly swath from Oregon to the southeast. The sun will be blacked out. Anyone living in a city or town, or travels to a location where this will occur, will be treated to quite a heavenly experience. There are numerous webpages listing all of the locations. Hotel rooms are filling up all across the country. I will be traveling about three hours into northern Oregon to view the eclipse.
Total solar eclipses are not that rare, happening on average three times every two years somewhere on the planet. There must be a new moon, meaning that one sees the dark side of the moon, making it invisible. Second, the tilt of the earth’s orbit must be to an exact degree. When these two conditions coincide a total solar eclipse occurs. For the United States, however, this has not happened in over 38 years!
Now, here is the real kicker! Another total solar eclipse is scheduled seven years later on April 8, 2024. This one will cross the United States from the southwest to the northeast. The two combined will form an imaginary “X” across the nation, crossing in the Midwest right where the New Madrid Fault Line is located.
There are always those who choose to make a spiritual and prophetic application to events like these. Some are religious nuts, but there is a certain amount of validity to making such a connection. Genesis 1:14 says that one of the reasons why God created the sun and moon was for “signs.” Luke 21:25 restates this, “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and among the earth dismay among nations…” Revelation 12:1 paints a picture that “a great sign appeared in heaven: a women clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet…” However one interprets these passages is not the point here. They are significant just by the fact that scripture mentions so much the sun and moon as signs. The recent four blood moons were heralded as an event connected with Israel. History has shown that previous blood moons were followed by a time of God acting on behalf of that nation. Clearly, God sometimes uses, but not always, the sun and moon as signs that something is going to happen.
God has a divine agenda. He is in charge of the universe, as it says in Colossians 1:16. He can use anything at his disposal to warn of judgment. God’s ultimate purpose, though, is to bring all people to experience his love, mercy, and grace.
There is speculation that the total solar eclipse, followed by another seven years later, forming an imaginary “X” across America, has some significance for this nation. What do you think?
