Do I Have to Do It God’s Way?

Most families have tried and true ways of accomplishing tasks that are handed down from one generation to the next. Whether remedy, time-saver, or safety measure, these ways of getting something done have been passed along because they work.

It was the Gallaher Cigarette Company in England that packed convenient how-to cards into every pack of their brand in the early 1900’s…Removing a splinter from one’s hand was accomplished by filling a wide-mouth glass bottle with hot water, then pressing the affected area of the hand to the bottle top to allow the combination of suction and steam to release the splinter. The homemaker of that time  could make her own fire extinguisher from salt, ammonium chloride, and water, stored in a glass bottle to be thrown directly into any household fire. And testing your butter for purity was as simple as smearing a small amount on paper, then setting it on fire. The odor was light and pleasant if it was butter, heavy and unpleasant if it was that impostor, margarine! Checking weather forecasts for the traveler on foot consisted of looking for a far-off cloud and waiting to see if it gained in size over time, meaning storms on the horizon.

When you’re sure your way of doing something is correct it can be a real challenge to consider another’s way. This is seen everywhere in our world, but especially when it comes to living God’s way. And He warned us of this:

Every man’s way is right in his own eyes,
But the Lord weighs and examines the hearts [of people and their motives].
Proverbs 21:2

We see played out before us a world of people all insisting that their way is right, but the Christian knows that only God’s Way will stand. Pray for wisdom to share the truth found in God’s Word  with others… It is not our way that we share, but His!
