Can Stand-Up Comedy Make A Good Family Sit-Down?

“So a guy walks into a bar…”

This is the phrase that’s used by a lot of comedians. Once it’s heard, the audience automatically believes it’s going to be a hilarious story. How it ends, is anybody’s guess. Stand-up comedy. It’s a very entertaining way to pass the time; whether it’s sitting in a live show or just watching it on TV, DVD, or the internet. But is it any good for Christian families?

Some of the top comedians associated with stand-up comedy include Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertainer, Bernie Mac, and most recently, Kevin Heart. These are some good comedians… Needless to say, it’s a known fact they aren’t afraid to use curse words in their acts–with the exception of Bernie Mac who’s now deceased, and Steve Harvey who’s now a Christian. Cursing is definitely not the language for a Christian family. Also, no topic is off-limits in secular comedy, and they’re not shy about making fun of others. When they’re on the stage, a place under the bus can be anybody’s spot. In addition, stand-up comedy usually takes place in a club or a bar, which is definitely not the place for a Christian family.

Well let me use this platform to introduce to you a different kind of stand-up comedy. Presenting–drum roll please–Christian comics doing clean family oriented Christ-seasoned comedy. These are men and women of God who have decided to choose wholesome stand-up comedy over the x-rated secular one. Oh, you didn’t know it’s possible? I have a confession….neither did I!!!

Christians are versatile, and God has blessed us in so many ways, with so many gifts, so we can in turn use those gifts to bless others. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10) What better way to serve and lead people to Christ, than through laughter? “A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed.” (Proverbs 15:13) Christian comics use jokes as the platform for sharing their life stories as well as Jesus’ story. So, both adults and children can sit down and enjoy wholesome humor.

If you choose not to have a family sit-down at home, you don’t have to go to a club or a bar either. Christian comedians are now making themselves available to come to your church. Go ahead, be open-minded, invite a comic to your church’s next event; be it a Youth Convocation or a Family Conference. These comedians will also visit schools so they can share jokes and Jesus with the juveniles. Some also perform in prisons or at personal functions, such as a birthday parties.
