“Johnny” Movie Review

This beautiful and touching movie was recommended by the Dove Foundation for ages 12 and older because it deals with death. It came out in 2010. This movie will bless you, especially if you have lost a child. You will definitely need tissues for this tear-jerker. There is a message of redemption, salvation, and forgiveness.

Dr. Drew Carter (Mel Fair) loses his 10 year old son in a car accident while his wife was driving. After the accident his wife, Julia (Musetta Vander) becomes emotionally absent from Drew and their daughter, Kayla (Aubyn Cole).

Dr. Miller, played by Lee Majors, refers Johnny, (Jerry Phillips) a foster child with leukemia to Drew. He thinks this might be a way to heal their family. The wife is opposed to the whole idea of adopting a terminally ill boy, mainly because of her guilt-ridden state of grief that plagues her. The daughter feels more and more rejected by her mother. Plus, Drew was growing more distant from his wife. He decides to take matters in his own hands and adopts Johnny for better or for worse.

Johnny did not know about all of these problems in the family. He is convinced that he is there for a special mission. When Johnny enters Dr. Carter’s world, the mission is revealed.

This movie illustrates that God’s goodness and good purposes remain even when terrible things happen in our lives. I recommend this movie. The main actors are great. Johnny’s character answers some tough questions. He also asks tough questions to the mother because she wasn’t dealing well with the loss of her son. Johnny tries to help her through her grief. I liked it. I hope you will, too.

2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT)—He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

Romans 8:28 (NLT)—And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

About Susan

I have always enjoyed writing little things, poems, devotionals, little short stories and bible studies. I love God and want to glorify His name and I love praising Him. I live in upstate New York with my Chihuahua-Snowball. My children are grown and left me with an empty nest. I have lots of time on my hands and love to fill it with God's Word.
