The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry–Movie Review

This movie was released into the theaters in September of 2009. It was directed by Rich Christiano and recommended by the Dove Family. It is a precious and heart-warming movie. It is very inspiring and great for the whole family to watch. This movie shows how one faithful man can make a difference in many lives.

James 1:22-24 (NKJV)—22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24) for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

Jonathan Sperry is an elderly and faithful Christian man played by Gavin MacLeod. He forms a special, deep friendship with a neighborhood boy who mows his lawn. He starts to teach the boy about the Gospel and the boy starts to bring his friends over for bible studies. Jonathan Sperry teaches the boys lessons they will treasure forever. There are lessons on life, friendship, and doing for others with God’s love. He shows the boys the importance of reading and listening to God’s Word, but more importantly to obey and do what His Word says.

Robert Guillaume is also in this movie.  He plays a reclusive, disgruntled and lonely elderly man. He is Jonathan Sperry’s and the young boy’s neighbor.  Jonathan asks his young friend to do a certain chore for the man—no matter what the old neighbor says. Of course the neighbor tells him not to do it, but the boy carries on just the same.  He learned to love the unlovable by Jonathan Sperry’s teachings from the bible studies. The ending will bring you to tears of joy.  It is a beautiful, Christian movie. You will be happy you watched it. I loved it and gave it 5 stars.

About Susan

I live in upstate New York with my Chihuahua-Snowball. My children are grown and left me with an empty nest. I have lots of time on my hands and love to fill it with God's Word.

  1. Probably my favorite Christian movie. The scripture that has always stuck with me from this is Ecc 7:2, where Jonathan tells the kids about how it is better to attend a funeral than a party. Thanks Susan for reviewing this movie! 🙂
