“What If…” Movie Review

This film came out in August of 2010.  It is rated PG because of mild thematic elements.  It is a comedy-drama. This movie depicts God’s mercy and forgiveness.  It is a story about hope, love, family, and redemption. It shows how God desires the best life for us, and if we give Him the chance, He will reveal His good plan for our lives. Christian values are prevalent throughout this movie. It’s a story of finding your true purpose in life.

Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo) chose to pursue a business opportunity instead of his true calling. One day at work he receives a message from Wendy, his ex- college sweetheart (Kristy Swanson) who he had left behind fifteen years ago. She is in town and would like to see him. At this point in his life, he is a well-to-do business man with a fancy girlfriend he just got engaged to, and is content with the way his life is going. He had not thought about Wendy for years.

After his new partnership announcement, Ben goes out to buy a new car. While he is taking a joy ride in his new Mercedes, it mysteriously breaks down.  A tow truck driver named Mike (John Ratzenberger) happens by and claims to be an angel sent to show Ben what his life would look like had he followed his true calling. Suddenly Ben wakes up in the middle of a domestic scene with Wendy as his wife and their two daughters are getting ready for church where Ben is the new pastor. Talk about a comical switch!

Before Ben can go back to his old life, he must first embrace this new reality; and discover the value of faith and family and his relationship with God. God has given Ben a second chance to do it right. It is a very entertaining movie for the whole family. It is a lot like the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but in a modern setting which is more relevant to today’s situations. I think the ending is very emotional.

Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)—In his heart a man plans his course; but the Lord determines his steps.

I live in upstate New York with my Chihuahua-Snowball. My children are grown and left me with an empty nest. I have lots of time on my hands and love to fill it with God's Word.
