7 Reasons it is Important to Have Quiet Moments with God

For the last several months, I have been consumed with all sorts of issues that have competed for my time with the Lord. I felt that I had so much to accomplish during the day, that I did not have as much time to spend quietly before the Lord. I often would feel rushed and pressured throughout my day, and running completely on empty. I soon realized what an impact not connecting to God had on me spiritually, physically and emotionally. Of course I still prayed and would read the Bible hurriedly, but I stopped taking the time to mediate and ponder what I had just read, and most importantly listening to what God may want to share with me. But, I just could stop long enough. I had much to do!

Can you relate to this madness? So much to do and so little time. I began taking care of a family member in my home and that took so much of my time. I truly believed that I was doing a good thing by putting my family member’s needs ahead of my much needed quiet time with the Lord. I paid a price for allowing my time with God to be cut short.

Why it is important to have quiet moments with the Lord?

  1. If we start our day in a hurry, we may miss what God may be wanting to show us.
  2. We can have less peace and more frustration, irritation and possibly anger.
  3. We may not know which direction God is leading us, because we have not stopped long enough to be still before Him.
  4. God usually speaks in stillness, not when we are rushing around. We may miss God speaking to us about a particular situation, and we end-up doing what we think is right instead.
  5. We can deepen our relationship with Jesus. We can get to know Christ more personally and intimately.
  6. Receive strength to live holy and righteous. We can find mercy for our sins and grace for our weaknesses.
  7. Lies of the enemy can be uprooted and exposed that have been polluting our minds and these can be replaced with the truth in God’s Word.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you. Matthew 6:33

Finding the right time to spend quiet time with God is important. For me, it is first thing in the morning. I also do best with 30-60 minutes of uninterrupted time. This may look differently for you. Some days I am not able to spend as much time with God, but I will try and spend additional time over the next several days.

You will know when you need a refilling time with God because you may find yourself tired, anxious, worried, and fearful, not sleeping well, depressed, or discouraged. These will serve as cues to let you know to sit at Jesus’ feet and rest a while.

This world that we live in can be difficult at times and meeting the demands of everyone around us can wear us out, but when we slip away to be with Jesus for some time of quietness we can receive what we need to go back out in the world. If your mind is cluttered from all of the cares of this world and you find it difficult to get quiet before the Lord, play some worship music first.

Run to the throne, not the phone! Well-meaning friends can have the best intentions to help us in our desperate times, but there are times we need to hear God for ourselves.

How do you find quiet moments with God? What do you do during your time with God?
