Boost Your Confidence to Talk to Atheists About Jesus

With Easter just a few days away I hope you take advantage of talking to others about the true meaning of Easter. Recently, I was talking to an atheist about his plans for Easter. He knows I’m a Christian and while I have talked about my faith openly with him, I haven’t invited him to church until this week. I invited him because I want him and his wife to hear why Jesus HAD to die for him.

I’m sure most of us have experienced these scenarios before. But are we really engaging people to come with us to church or a Bible study group?

I have a guess that one of the reasons we don’t engage people: they might ask a question we don’t have the answer to. What if they start talking about being a free-thinker or how they believe something only if it sounds reasonable?

Here are a few ideas to boost your confidence:

1)  Read the Bible!!! I’m starting out with the most important thing you need to do every single day. While you may be saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, it doesn’t mean you know the bible. I say this with encouragement because I know it’s not easy. But if you intend to lead people to the truth, you have to know what the truth is.

2)  Study science and philosophy. You don’t have to get a degree in these areas but do familiarize yourself with these subjects. Many people think that Christianity does not involve science or philosophy but actually, they complement one another. You are studying the things God has created and the way He designed people to think. (Hint: there is evidence for God in these subjects).

3)  Don’t be afraid. God constantly reminds us in His word not to have fear and that we can trust Him. When I first started learning about Christian apologetics it was overwhelming. I soon found out I could use this information to talk to atheists. The disciples dealt with doubt too, so you’re in good company. God is patient and will guide us to what we need to know in the time we need it most.

So start small if you need to; the deeper you dig for the truth found only in Jesus, the more confidence you will have in speaking to atheists.

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”  –Isaiah 1:18

When have you taken the courageous step to talk to atheists about your faith?
