Can I Please Just Have A Little Peace?

My recent health problems have taken me to many hospitals, doctors and many places in between. While I was seeing to my own physical needs, I began to see the need of those taking care of me. I took notice of their expressions and their comments to me. I’m struck that almost everyone I ran into agreed on one thing; they were saying to themselves and to me: “Can I please just have a little peace?”

We all seek a place of peace within ourselves, as we go about our lives, struggling with life’s demands.  But, confusion and fatigue appeared to rule in the lives of most people I met. Most seemed to have very little hope of finding peace in their lives. What rules our hearts determines whether we have any peace. The war that rages there causes us to be unsettled, wondering where to find peace amidst the warring of our souls. How do we find peace in the middle of the war going on there?

Colossians 3:15-16

People long for their souls to be at rest. Having peace in one’s heart is a wonderful gift from God that all Christians have an opportunity to enjoy. The same God who had the power to save us, also has the power to give us rest if only we would, “let the peace of God rule in our hearts.” Why do so many who proclaim faith in Jesus Christ lack this, “peace that passeth all understanding?”

The Bible teaches us to, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly“. This indwelling of the Holy Spirit gives us godly wisdom. With that wisdom we receive from Him, we are to teach each other and hold each other accountable for this peace through “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” Scripture tells us this is a corporate effort: “ye are called in one body”. We are to do this as one body in Christ, with the knowledge of His grace that makes it all possible.

Having peace in our hearts is a “heart condition”. Do we put our faith and trust in God’s providence so that His peace rules in our hearts? We have been conditioned by sin and the world to let circumstances determine the state of our hearts.

We are searching for peace in God. Scripture tells us that we have peace when God’s rule is at peace is in our hearts. Instead of looking for peace, we should be seeking Him to have more rule over our heart’s condition.

Peace is something God gives us. As God rules more of our heart, His “peaceable Spirit” then has more control over us. Christ is our judge. His Spirit settles all the disputes of our hearts. Are we allowing His peace to rule and to settle all the disputes?

The, “word of Christ” is the Gospel which dwells in every Christian. We need each other’s help in keeping the house clean in which “the Word” dwells. Keeping our own house clean is a most difficult task. That is why we should not forsake the assembling of fellow believers. We must teach each other, lift each other up and hold each other accountable for the condition our hearts are in. Are we helping each other to put more of our hearts under His control? The more control we give to God, the more at peace our heart will be.

                         In This Quiet Moment

In this quiet moment…All the world seems right
I see only good days and quiet is all the night
God has given me His rest and all is very still
He is with me making His Word become so real

I am no longer cursing the day of my own birth
My Savior’s blood was the estimation of my worth
He stills all the noise of my turbulent seas
He listens to my heart and hears its pleas

In this quiet moment…I study to be quiet so
His grace will make beautiful my evil and wretched soul
In my heart He finds the man that is hidden there
The new man made free from the power of the air

To those that are at ease they cannot understand
How in all this chaos I’m so quiet in this foreign land
I hang on to His peace and it keeps me in my silence
Though my offering is small He smells a sweet fragrance

In this quiet moment…I need not ask for any sign
Because His peace be still isn’t just offered its mine
“Thus saith the lord” I have truly come to believe
For in this quiet moment…His flaming sword is in its sleeve
