Does Your Soul Have a Price?

It’s fun to dream about what you would do if you had all the money you needed in your bank account.  Imagine having  a billion dollars … it would take you 114 years to spend every cent if you spent $1,000 every day of your life! If you combined the incomes of the top 20 billionaires in the world you would have a total of 826.5 billion dollars in wealth, acquired through different means:  computer programs and websites, real estate, cosmetics, even beer.

Having adequate income is essential in today’s world. Many suffer immensely due to an inability to acquire the finances needed for basic human necessities like food, water, clothing and medications. Others have over-abundance, but many of these choose to contribute from their wealth in order to help others live better. Having money is not a bad thing, as long as it does not have you! It is the love of money that is a sin …

What does it benefit a man to gain the whole world [with all its pleasures], and forfeit his soul?  Mark 8:36

It’s easy to focus on the temporal because that is what we see.   What about the soul–the mind, will and emotions? When we strive for wealth, status, and other temporary things that are in the process of dying away, we can easily lose our focus on the things that last forever. We can even find ourselves engaging in destructive behaviors in order to gain more. But God tells us plainly that even if we gain the whole world, we will end up with nothing that is lasting unless we have Him.

” … a man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God has not given him the power or capacity to enjoy them [all those things which are gifts from God], but a stranger [in whom he has no interest succeeds him and] enjoys them. This is vanity and it is a [cause of] great distress.  Ecclesiastes 6:2

Everything comes from God into our hands, including the ability to truly enjoy what we have. What we do with the goods of this earth, and where we place our focus, is our choice. With God’s help, we can keep our eyes on the real prize of eternal life with Him and in so doing, have a healthy soul.

Many people go to great lengths to gain the things this world can offer and never understand that to God, they are priceless.

How have you been tempted to give up what’s most valuable for what is temporal?
