How Do You Get Your Spiritual Food?

Just as how hats protect our heads, spiritual food protects our souls. But just as how you have to put the hat on your head, you have to put the spiritual food in your mouth. Family, friends and pastors can freely provide the spiritual food we need, but if we do not voluntarily soak up their offerings, it’s useless. In addition, we have to accept responsibility for our souls. “Jesus answered him, ‘truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

Even if others don’t help us to receive our spiritual fulfillment, we have to go and seek that food. When we genuinely hunger and thirst after God, we’ll make an effort to search for Him. Some hats we wear only do half the job; they don’t fully cover and protect our heads. In fact, some just do the bare minimum in order to be classified as a hat. Sadly, we fall into the same trap too. Sometimes we think its OK to scrape by. So, we may scan through a chapter in the Bible, fall asleep praying, or attend church every now and then. Let’s diligently work every day to build our relationship with God by consuming meaningful spiritual food.

The church is the number place to get spiritual fulfillment. However, sometimes we view it as just a place to spend passing hours. It shouldn’t be just a place to meet friends… or eat… or have a good time. It should be a place where we go to worship and praise: “Let us go to the sanctuary of the Lord, let us worship at the footstool of His throne.” (Psalm 132:7) The church should also be the place we go for a deep connection with God, through partaking in spiritual food. But we cannot fully feast upon the word with the phone in our hand texting or when we’re busy talking—even worst, when we’re not in church to begin with! Yes, church services should be interactive and captivating as it should be equally spiritual and uplifting. Still, we’re in charge of our own salvation. We have to make sure our hearts are right with God.

Are you happy coming into the house of God? In Psalm 122:1 David said, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘let us go into the house of the Lord.” Is church the only place where you get spiritual food? How do you get yours?
