Power Over The Storm

Have you ever heard the following saying?

“Stop telling God how big your storm is. Start telling the storm how big your God is.”

Well I say “right on!” Sometimes we get so caught up in the storms of life that we forget how powerful our God really is. Not only did he speak this universe into existence  (Psa 33:9), but He also has divine providence over it (Col 1:16). That means you, me, and everything else. This includes all storms; both literal and metaphorical.

A Mighty Tempest

Do you remember the story of Jonah and the Great Fish? There was a mighty tempest and as soon as Jonah was tossed overboard, God silenced it. He literally shut it down completely. That’s because “He is able”, and God doesn’t play around in serious circumstances. He got what he wanted, and that was Jonah’s attention. As soon as that happened, the rest of the ship’s crew was free to go on its merry way.

Sometimes God allows storms to happen in our lives to get our attention. This doesn’t mean the storms can’t be silenced. God simply wants you to grasp the message that is being delivered into your life. Once you align yourself with God’s will, you’ll find that life’s storms are quickly silenced.

Silencing the Storm

So here’s the situation. Jesus is sleeping in a boat and his disciples are fretting over a mighty storm. The disciples go to Jesus and wake Him up. And what does He do? He rebukes the storm and it is silenced (Matt 8:24-27). Wow, what a site that must have been. The lesson to be learned is this. God has power over all things including “storms”, whether they are literal storms or life’s demands. He just asks for us to have a bit of faith in Him to handle things.

Sometimes He is The Storm

Still not convinced? Well let’s look at it from another angle. Sometimes our Lord is the storm. That’s right! There are times in which He helps us by being a storm, and I’m about to show you a couple examples in the Holy Bible where this happened.

A Pillar of Fire

After Pharaoh let the Hebrew people go, God knew His people still needed support. So what did He do? He followed along in a pillar of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. Wow! How cool is that? Fire it up! God was literally backing up His children as they headed towards the promised land (Exodus 13:21-22). Not only did He follow them, but he wrecked the Egyptians following the Hebrews while they were crossing the Red Sea.

Exodus 14:24-25 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians

A Mighty Rushing Wind

Now on to the New Testament. At Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit made His appearance, He appeared as a mighty rushing wind.

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

So awesome! So again, here we have God as a storm backing up His people. How exciting that must have been for those anxiously awaiting a mighty move from God. As Christians we have the same Spirit in our lives that at times moves about as a mighty rushing wind.

Final Thought

Friends, God is bigger than any storm you can imagine except when He is the storm. Don’t let life’s cares put you in a corner. Ride the storm that is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Do this and you’ll have nothing to fear in life. Give your control over to the Mighty Storm that is God. Thank you for reading and God bless.

What are some of life’s storms that you need to be swallowed up by our Lord, the Mighty Storm?

  1. Awesome article, Joel! I just finished teaching through a series on Jonah, and there were so many things packed into that little book that I had never noticed before, including some interesting facts about the storm.
