The Gamble You Can’t Afford to Take

Do you consider yourself a gambler? I don’t necessarily mean someone who plays online poker for money, goes to Las Vegas and tries to win big at the blackjack table, or just someone who buys lottery tickets. One definition of a gambler is simply “someone who risks anything of value on the outcome of something involving chance.”

My friend, you may not gamble with your money, but every person born puts at stake something infinity more valuable: their soul. Recently I heard a Bible teacher pass on something that I want you to really think about:

“Either there IS a God or there ISN’T. Both possibilities are frightening.”

If there is no God, then life is completely meaningless, and we are all just here by complete chance. We just all evolved from a rock, millions of years ago and our life has no inherent value or worth. When we die we just decompose in the dirt, and life as we know ceases to exist, so we might as well do whatever we want and try to enjoy our purposeless existence on earth to the best of our abilities. However if there IS a God and He has a particular preference for how we live our lives, a plan for how we return to communion with Him and specific goals for what we do on this side of eternity, then WHOA, we better find out what those ideals are!

French mathematician, physicist, inventor and philosopher Blaise Pascal said:

“How can anyone lose who chooses to be a Christian? If, when he dies, there turns out to be no God and his faith was in vain, he has lost nothing–in fact, has been happier in life than his non-believing friends. If, however, there is a God and a heaven and hell, then he has gained heaven and his skeptical friends will have lost everything in hell!”

In a recent article I wrote to people who don’t know Jesus Christ, I said that, for a believer, life on earth will be the only hell you ever experience, yet for a non-believer this life will be the only heaven you ever experience.

The reality is that the tenets of Christianity and the claims of Jesus Christ are so utterly unique in contrast with every other spiritual or religious idea that exists in the world. Jesus Christ actually claimed to be the TRUTH and the only WAY to GOD. (John 14:6) I wrote another blog a while back where I shared the Case for Christianity by C.S. Lewis, and I highly recommend you read it if you haven’t yet.

So again, there either is a God or their isn’t. If we were to gamble with our hard-earned money, we must count the cost and weigh the risk versus the reward. Any intelligent person must do the same when gambling with their own soul’s eternity in either heaven or hell.

Dr. James Simpson was a Scottish doctor who lived in the 1800s, responsible for the discovery of the anesthetic properties of chloroform. A couple quotes of his are worth mentioning:

“Christianity works because it is supremely true and therefore supremely livable. There is nothing incompatible between religion and science.”

Once, he was asked about his greatest discovery and replied:

“It was not chloroform. It was to know I am a sinner and that I could be saved by the grace of God. A man has missed the whole meaning of life if he has not entered into an active, living relationship with God through Christ.”

The most intelligent thing we can do as humans is not hedge our bets when we come face-to-face with eternity. If we got tomorrow’s paper today and saw the winning lottery numbers, buying a ticket would no longer be a gamble. Your victory would be assured. God has given us eternity’s newspaper for our use today–the Holy Bible. The winning letters to this gamble with our souls would spell something like this:     R-E-P-E-N-T and B-E-L-I-E-V-E.

We must repent of our sins and believe in the One God sent to save us.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” – Acts 3:19

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” – Romans 10:9

As I shared a few weeks ago, there is an appropriate response to the reality of God. The beauty of God’s truth as revealed in the Gospel is that God blots out our sins and replaces them with the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ when we repent and believe in Him. Then we can shine His light shining into this world of darkness.

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 4:6

Do you live with the assurance of your salvation in eternity?  If not, why are you gambling with your own soul? Will you allow God’s light to shine in your heart today?

If you have believed in Jesus, what is your testimony of repentance and belief in Christ? Comment if you would like us to pray with you. God Bless

About Jason Herrington

After spending fifteen years of his life aggressively pursing financial success in various business endeavors, Jason became disillusioned with what was being taught by the success “experts.” After many years searching for answers amongst new-age teachings, the mystical, the occult, and other spiritual practices, he found that nothing made a lasting difference in his life--which was becoming increasingly confusing and wrought with hardship. No matter how hard he worked he was left with more problems and questions. Then, a few years later he found the one solution that would change his life forever--giving his life to Jesus Christ. Once a strong skeptic and opponent of Christianity, now Jason is completely in awe of the God who, in His mercy, still made Himself known to him, despite his aversion. Now he is passionate and committed to searching for answers exclusively from God’s Word. His ministry seeks to target any and all individuals attracted to the success and personal development industry, as well as the new age movement, and deliver God’s truth.
