The Spiritual War on Mental Illness

By Joel B.

Mental illness plagues many of us. It creeps up on us and it can oftentimes be suffocating or make us feel like we’re not normal. However, I’m here to tell you that you can breathe easy, your life is pretty normal, and the Holy Bible offers some words of wisdom for dealing with these types of conditions. Let’s take some time and explore our mental health from a biblical framework.

God Cares

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

The first thing to remember is that God cares about your mental health. He wants you to have a sound mind and He will move to help you have one if you look to Him. This means being spiritually grounded and doing things to include devotions and regular prayer. Remember, intentionally drawing close to God will draw Him closer to you (James 4:8).

Don’t Be Anxious

Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This may sound like a tall order, but when you practice praying when you become anxious, you’ll see that the anxiety will likely dissipate. That is because prayer puts us in a state of humility before God and allows us to focus on what is going on. It also gives us a chance to thank and praise our Creator for what He is doing in our lives. Out with the bad and in with the good.

Know The Difference

Just because you have the symptoms of a mental illness doesn’t necessarily mean you have a mental illness. Many times the problem is actually spiritual oppression, so you have to root out the spiritual wickedness. I would encourage every Christian to know and understand Ephesians 6. It talks about how we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood, but rather spiritual wickedness. It also talks about the seven spiritual armors we can use to defeat this wickedness. Friend, if you don’t know it, please read it today.

Faith Is Key

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Satan and his minions will attack anyone they can get their claws sunk into. However, they will most certainly attack people who can easily be convinced or intimidated by their methods. Stand strong in your faith and know that God has promised you a sound mind.

Salvation, Sweet Salvation!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

If you are having trouble with mental illness or spiritual oppression, please consider if you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. He can save you from any mental illness or demonic attack, and there is also the nice extra perk of having a promised eternal heavenly home with Him. 1. Amen and amen! Just because there are symptoms of mental illness, it does not mean you have a mental illness. In many cases, if you go to a doctor, you will get an evaluation with a diagnosis behind it, the reason for this is so that insurance companies will pay, including Medicaid. Once you get a “label,” it is hard to erase that.
God had revealed to me that a tormenting spirit can convenience someone they are mentally ill, especially if there is a family history of mental illness. We can then start agreeing with what the enemy is saying, and before long we are certain there is mental illness. There is a spirit of mental illness, this is not to say everyone who has a mental illness does not really have one, but I have seen demonic oppression and lying spirits on way too many people when I worked at a psychiatric hospital and mental health clinic. I also saw how quickly people got diagnosed with a mental illness, and prescribed medications, usually that numbed them of feelings.
Here’s a thought, what if every thought that comes into our minds, we take captive and believe the truth in God’s Word. What if we believed God is the bondage breaker, even with mental illness. Why is is too hard for God? God does care about if you are tormented in your mind, this is not God’s plan for you.
If you have been diagnosed with a mental illness, this is not to condemn. There are some cases in which people have low levels of dopamine, serotonin (feel god hormones that regulates moods), and sometimes hormonal imbalances, but even so, you still have to line your thoughts with the truth of God’s Word, and speak faith-filled, positive affirmations about your situation.
