The Tongue of the Wise Brings Healing

Proverbs 12:18” The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Have you ever looked in the mirror and saw a sneaker sticking out of your mouth? You are in the midst of a heated discussion with your friend, spouse or child and you say words that pierce like a knife; you made your point but you left their heart in a million pieces on the floor as they ran out of the room weeping uncontrollably.

We’ve all had those moments where we wish we could catch those verbal missiles in midair to stop them from penetrating the other person’s heart.  The bible has much to say about guarding our mouths and being careful with what we say.   Proverbs 18:21” The tongue has the power of life and death….” Imagine, our tongues have the power of life and death and that is a big responsibility to carry. We can either speak life or death to a person and we will be held accountable for every word we speak.

That is why it is so important to let the Spirit of God take control of our tongues. We cannot control our tongues in the flesh for they are ignited by the very fires of hell; as James tells us so clearly. Beloved, do not give up hope that you will never be able to control what comes out of your mouth. Be encouraged to know God our Father will guard our mouths and watch over our lips if we give control of them over to him. Psalm 141:3” Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” We do this by meditating on his word and begin to have our minds transformed; so we begin to think and therefore talk like God wants us to talk.

We are called to be ambassadors of Christ to this planet bringing healing to humanity with our words. So learn to pick up a hurting brother or sister by speaking words of healing so we can lift them up in their time of need. Remember the holder of a wise tongue speaks healing.

  1. It’s amazing how the tongue, such a small part of our body, can speak life and death all in the same? James points out that the tongue cannot be tamed by any man…”it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8). How can this tiny muscle allow us to taste such things, and yet from the same part we can also taste bitterness especially when we spew forth words not of love. I am so thankful that God is quick to forgive us of our shortcomings. Thank you for this insightful reminder of our failures and God’s grace and mercy.

    • Welcome Renee G,
God can use that small “rudder” for his glory to release His power and blessing in our lives and all those around us.

  2. Thank you for using this forum to speak this truth to our ears for we do hear you loud and clear! The power of the pen can do what might cannot. More so we see the power of God’s word that is able to change the soul of man and his eternal destiny! 🙂
May The Lord be our present help to use our speech as we ought.
