Why The Law Became Obsolete

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.” (Hebrews 8:10)

God allows people who have never heard the law, to be judged by the law in their hearts. God wrote these moral laws in the hearts of all men. Everyone knows not to kill others, steal things, or lie–it’s natural law. The law in itself was merely a prelude to what Christ would bring us. The law was the schoolmaster, it taught people right from wrong, and once the lessons were learned the Old Law became obsolete. (Galatians 3:24-25Romans 2:14-15)

Today the inheritance from God, promised to Abraham, falls to the Gentiles, (those of us who are not Jews by birth) because Israel, as a nation, refused to believe that Christ is the Savior.

Christ was the seed promised to Abraham in Genesis 12:7, and only those who accept Christ will inherit the blessings of Abraham,  (Galatians 3:16) through faith, not by law. In Abraham’s day, the Law of Moses didn’t exist nor the Ten Commandments, only faith in God, (Galatians 3:7). And God Himself, realizing that man could not keep the Law of Moses, instituted the New Covenant (Hebrews 8:7-8).

As men we often fail, no matter how hard we try, and this dilemma goes way back to the early days of the Christian Church. In Romans 7:14-20, Paul tried to get a handle on it, and came up with a profound answer in Romans 7:24-25“O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”

Sin will always be there, but we must learn to bring it under subjection and do our best to not give into its desires and whims. We must remember that our bodies are made out of the things of the earth, so they crave the things of the earth. It’s unavoidable, but by not giving into the lusts of the flesh we defeat the sinful nature that abides in us.

So many men and women fail as Christians because they cannot fulfill the laws required by the Holy Bible. Their struggles get the better of them, and they fall away, thinking they failed God, but it is merely a trick of the enemy. God understands that we cannot abide by the rules He gave to Moses, that is why He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, giving us a chance to return to our heavenly home.

The Law became obsolete, and now we just need to accept Christ as the sacrifice, try to live a righteous life and know that God will reach out to us and pull us home when our time is up.

How often have you failed and thought God would abandon you, only to discover that it drew you closer to Him?
