Your Super-power: Choose What You Get Used To

We are wonderfully made.  We have so much texture and depth.  Our minds, and ultimately our lives, are programmable in such a way that we become what we get used to.

Be careful what you get used to.  If we are not careful, we can grow very quickly accustomed to things that benefit neither us nor those around us.  We can grow accustomed to many things … some people get used to junk food, some people get used to a nightcap to help sleep, some people get used to chaos and fighting and constant bickering, and some people get used to pain and abuse.

It’s not that these things are what we really want in life–No!  It’s that habits and thought patterns are subtle and sneaky.  We grow comfortable a little at a time.  I know I need to do daily inventory on my heart and what’s on my mind because often I get used to the wrong things.  I’m sure we all do.

“My Child, pay attention to what I say.  Listen carefully to my words.  Don’t lose sight of them.  Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.   Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”  Proverbs 20-23

I love that last part … Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.  So many questions can be answered with this verse.  Guarding your heart doesn’t mean growing cynical or bitter or putting up walls … it means being careful what you get used to.  Watch what you allow into your life.

We all have the a super-hero power–the power of choice.  God gives us this freedom to choose.

What choice do you face today? How can you know what is good?
