Family Fun Night Challenge

It’s Sunday night and my mind flashes back to Sunday nights as a kid sitting in front of the television for the evening family movie. Popcorn freshly popped and orange juice made fresh from the freezer. Some nights the treat would be even sweeter such as pudding or apple crisp. Not every Sunday was a movie. Most were actually game nights. Board games. No Wii, X-box, Nintendo, DS, and whatever else is available. Actually, my family never owned a gaming system and most shockingly, I did not have cable growing up. The only place we could view past our four channels was a weekend at grandmas.

Anytime popcorn is popped fresh off the stove, this is where my mind wanders. Spending time together as a family. I have tried my best to instill some of the same traditions with my own children. Some have remained while others have trickled away as they have gotten older.

When was the last time anyone in your family thought about not only spending time with one another but also tuning out from the outside world? Unplugging, disconnecting, and turning towards one another’s company to entertain the evening. “I can’t!” you scream out. I don’t know what to do. Well, here are a few ideas to start with. You could…

  • Have a bake off
  • Play a board game (Checkers, Farkle, Sorry are just a few of our favorites)
  • Create a Karaoke night. Maybe it will turn into a sing off
  • Complete a craft together. (Make Christmas ornaments)
  • Play charades
  • Make up a dance routine
  • Create a shadow show
  • Write a story and illustrate it
  • Have a cupcake war
  • Make it a trivia night
  • Go sing Christmas carols to a nursing home or shelter

Certainly the list has no end. These are only starters to get your mind thinking outside of the technological box. God has only given us twenty-four hours in each day. How we chose to spend it is up to us. Let us make the most of our time to not fall trap to becoming a slave to the day, but instead enjoy the time with one another.  I challenge you to have your own family fun night and share with us how you met the challenge.

“This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

  1. Every couple nights we sit in the living room together and play a game. Our latest favorites are Bingo and Hi-Ho-Cherri-O. Even if I don’t initially enjoy it, I always end up having a good time. Sometimes I get so busy and don’t think it’s a high priority to sit around with the hubs and girls and play games. However, it’s the sweetest time together. My hubs and I have Cribbage Challenges every couple nights, too, after the girls are asleep.

    This is a great article!
