How to Protect Your Relationships from the Enemy

Think about it, what better way to keep you from truly experiencing God’s great love than for the enemy to use the people closest to you to cause you constant confusion, fear, insecurity and disconnectedness?

God wishes for His children to experience unity and harmony in our relationships. That requires both parties to be deeply connected and synergetic: out for the same goal. He instructs us to be patient, kind, selfless, honoring, protective, forgiving and persistent. (1 Corinthians 13)

Our loving God wishes to develop and transform us into the likeness of His son, Jesus. This is known as the sanctification process. When we’re truly in alignment with His will (which we can find through His Word, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and through prayer) we will gain a greater understanding of what He wants FOR us, and what He wants FOR our relationships.

The enemy is the master of confusion.

If we allow evil roots like bitterness and pride to contaminate our hearts, wickedness begins to grow by way of uncontrolled anger, resentment, selfishness, impatience, and unforgiveness. These things create a divide not only with our partner, but also with God. We are given many instructions about how to live and treat one another in Scripture and when we don’t obey, when we allow evil to take root in our hearts, we separate ourselves from experiencing God’s best which is a harvest of the Fruit of the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22).

I once heard it put this way, “Unhealthy people cannot grow in healthy environments just as healthy people cannot grow in unhealthy environments.”

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

When God is not at the center of our relationships, it is common to experience division through contamination and confusion. (Just what the enemy wants!) When both people are sold out and surrendered to God’s will, there’s a great sense of peace, harmony, and unity that cannot be broken.

I love how the New Living Translation puts it in Ecclesiastes 4:12,
“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

A relationship like this, orchestrated and united by God, is the biggest threat to the enemy. Why? Because two people that are on fire for the Lord and are united create massive Kingdom impact.

In a God-anointed relationship, both people seek to serve one another out of reverence for God. Both people view the other as a great gift, a heavenly treasure and consider it an honor to be given a backstage pass into the heart of the other person. Mutual submission is a natural byproduct. Honor and respect are easily and unabashedly shown. Patience and forgiveness are a given. Family and friends will be supportive because they will be able to easily recognize and respect the relationship because they can see the fruit it produces. Both people inspire, encourage and support one another without conditions. Their testimony will inspire others to pursue godly relationships as well.
