Elections: We Vote, The Lord Appoints

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul and said, “I am doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler over Israel, his special possession. 1 Samuel 10:1 (NLT)

The midterm elections are over. The pundits are attempting to analyze the results. How did you do? Did you pick winners or were you disappointed as you watched the projected winners appear on the TV screen?

Whether or not your candidate came out on top is not as significant (or revealing) as whether or not you bothered to vote. Fulfilling your responsibility as a citizen is what is important. Many eligible voters stayed home on November 5th. What does that say about us? Are we an unappreciative, ‘disenfranchised,’ or skeptical electorate? Or are we just uninterested and lazy?

According to exit polls, a large percentage of the nation believes that we’re headed in the wrong direction – with good reason. Our international relationships and our geopolitical status have been degraded. Our national credit rating had been downgraded. Our borders have yet to be secure. Every day there is yet another example of the erosion of our freedoms and the acceptance of moral decline.

International relations, the economy, world events, and multiple domestic problems and questionable policies are all legitimate causes for concern. These are also the reasons we must resist cynicism and engage in the political process.

As Christians, our choices should be in agreement with Biblical principles. We may not always be sure of the candidates and whether or not they are truthful and genuine. We need to seek God’s guidance when making our selections. Then leave the outcome in His hands.

Your candidate, party, or issue may have been victorious…(or not.) The election is over. It is not, however, time to rest or retreat. We must continue to hold them accountable, incumbents and newly elected officials alike.

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! Psalm 2:10  (NLT)
