Our Hope: God’s Hand Can Reach Down

‘If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.’  Psalm 139:9 (NIV)

There is a song I love that speaks to God’s ‘always’ presence, to His power, and His swiftness.  The line of the lyrics that grips me is, ‘There’s not a place where God’s hand can’t reach down…’  It’s about how satan can’t hurt us because God is always with us.  I can imagine myself in a trial of some sort, where I am afraid satan will devour me, just knowing I cannot escape him where I am at the moment.  But then I realize there is no place, not anywhere on this earth or beyond, that God’s hand can’t reach down.

We all face troubles like that.  We think that since we can’t fix the situation ourselves, then there is no rescue for us.  We often feel like we have created such a mess all by ourselves that we have no right to even expect or hope that God will intervene on our behalf.  But that is the total opposite of what God says in His Word.  He tells us to ‘…Be strong and courageous…’ (Joshua 1:7), and, ‘So do not fear, for I am with you…’ (Isaiah 41:10).

When we operate in fear, we have no ability to help ourselves.  But if we will just trust God, then He will not only help us, He will also give us wisdom and divine guidance.  Trusting that He is always with us, no matter how far we have gone from Him, no matter the chaos we find ourselves in, will prove His faithfulness.  He has shown again and again how He delivers what He has promised…always.  He is Our Hope, and He will never leave us or forsake us, never ignore our cries, never leave us to wallow in our own sin and unwise choices.  We must let go of our pride, and allow God to do what He does best…reach down with His hand and rescue us.

Remember God loves you and wants to protect you, so seek that small haven and be guided by prayer to that place of protection within God’s loving care. — Helen Steiner Rice
