Our Hope: His Name Is Yeshua

“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for he will save His people from their sins.”  Matthew 1:21

YESHUA.  When pronounced correctly, it is soft, flowing, almost like a warm summer’s rain.  It brings with it a sense of peace upon the hearing of it.  It is a name like no other.  Because it is the name of Jesus, the name of our Savior.

I have long been fascinated by the name Yeshua.  I first heard it in the movie, The Passion of The Christ.  I have had it as the banner on my cell phone screen.  I even once made a pretty sign to hang near my desk, of just that name.  Each time I looked at it, I found strength, comfort, and peace.  But I never knew why it so captured me. I did not understand what was different, or so very special about it.  And I could not find it in the Bible, not in any of the versions I own.  I only knew it was another name for Jesus.

But it is more than that.  It is not another name.  It is HIS name.  Yes, it is the original Hebrew name that in the English translates to Joshua.  You see, in the original language of the Bible, neither Hebrew or Greek contained the letter J.  But the Y gave it the J sound.  So essentially the Hebrew name Yeshua translates into the English as Joshua, and in the Greek it translates into Jesus.  We see this in the King James version of the Bible in the book of Acts, where the name Jesus is used to describe the Joshua we know from the Old Testament.  Through this, we see with our own eyes how the names Jesus and Joshua are virtually interchangeable.

“Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David.”  Acts 7:45

The name Yeshua means “The Lord’s Salvation,” or Messiah.  It also infers crying out to the LORD for help.  We know our LORD Jesus in these ways.  We can only achieve salvation through Him, and He is our only constant and very evident help.  He is the crucified but risen Messiah.  But He is so much more to us.

The names of Jesus are many and varied.  Some are names we associate only with Him, such as The Lamb of God, and The Lion of Judah.  Others are words we find in our everyday speech, such as Counselor, Almighty, and Advocate.  Some names speak to salvation, such as Bread of Life, Cornerstone, and Redeemer.  There are too many names to list here, but each one is perfectly aligned with Who He Is, His character, and His purposes.

He is Yeshua.  He is light, He is life, and He is love.  He is Messiah, the Anointed One, sent by the Father to redeem and save.  He is Our Hope.  And because He is, we can learn to appreciate all of His names.  When we know and understand who Jesus is, worship becomes so much sweeter–we speak and honor the names of our Lord.  He is Jesus, and He is Our Hope, The Lord of All.

“In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.  Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:15
