The Character of America: What Exactly Is It?

Leviticus 19:4 “You should act toward the stranger who lives among you as you would toward one born among you. Love him as you love yourself. For you were strangers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

• Millions of truly innocent lives are ended “legally,” by abortion
• Elder abuse is on the rise
• Entitlement supersedes social responsibility
• Religious persecution through litigation
• A leading presidential candidate considers global warming  “climate change” the greatest threat facing the world today
• Gender is an “identity” you choose, regardless of one’s actual gender–creating public accommodation chaos
• A political climate that is exacerbating racial tension rather than fostering reconciliation
• Veterans who have given their lives and limbs for their country and for freedom are given less respect than law-breakers and non-citizens
• The “Million-students” are upset that murder, mayhem, and terrorism have stolen their spotlight
• Success and personal achievement are demonized because it isn’t “fair”
• Personal responsibility has been forfeited for a Robin-hood like socialism in which freedom now means freedom to take the wealth of those who worked to achieve it
• Greed is denounced and envy is championed
• Those holding to their Christian values are viewed as backward, hateful, and intolerant
• We are sending our children to public institutions of “learning” that promote all of the above

America is not a theocracy. It was, however, founded on Christian principles. If it is the principles of that very foundation that are being undermined, how is our character to be defined? Our enemies refer to us as “infidels.” After a review of the list above, what would our defense be against such an accusation?

Without acknowledging our own Christian heritage how can we define our character as a nation? A remnant of our Christian heritage still remains today. Prayer warrior are on their knees, praying for this country. They are praying for eyes to be opened and hearts to be transformed.

God hears our prayers. And just as He answered the prayers of the faithful in Israel, He will answer ours.

Whether or not we accept refugees–and the consequences of doing so is a political issue that, as Christians, we must entrust to God. We must, however, continue to pray faithfully for:

• wisdom for our leaders
• protection for our citizens
• above all–for the salvation of the lost, including our enemies

Mr. Obama seeks to trumpet our values without supporting our heritage. Ultimately, our government will make the decision. That decision may be done for legitimate reasons or for political ones. Our elected officials may or may not listen to our concerns. The outcome, however, is in God’s hands and it may just be the answer to our prayers.

The character of America may be hard to define at this point in time. The character of followers of Christ is not. The character of a Christian is not insensitive. It is not selfish or rude or cruel. It is not fearful, suspicious or bigoted. Neither is it naive, but trusts in the Lord.

Christian character is love.

Romans 13:8 Do not owe anyone anything, but love each other. Whoever loves his neighbor has done what the Law says to do.”
