A Good Name, or Gold?

Among my father’s things we found a letter dated May, 1886. The handwriting had faded, but the words of Robert White, minister at Sea-View Cottage in  County Down, Ireland, still attest to the character of my great-grandfather, James.

In the letter, the minister bore testimony to the “honest”, “industrious”, and “sober” moral character of his friend of ten years. That letter made the journey with my great-grandfather when he boarded a ship set for  America in that same year. I’m sure it must have been like fine gold to that young Irishman when he applied for a job in his new land, looked for a place to call home, and sought membership in a new church.

Our character follows us like a shadow everywhere we go. When those familiar with us hear our name they make a judgment about us based on how we have conducted ourselves. Good character matters to God so much that He says it is more to be desired than silver or gold!

good name [earned by honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches; And favor is better than silver and gold.  Proverbs 22:1

Of all the pursuits we may strive after, seeking to attain a good and honorable name through godly choices should have a high place of priority…What do others think when they hear your name?
