D Minor Days

It has been said that d minor is the saddest of music chords. Some of the greatest classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin, composed in d minor. Their music is still played today for its beauty, and perhaps for its ability to touch the human spirit.

It has also been said that Psalm 88 is the saddest psalm in the bible—set to chant mournfully, a petition to be saved from death;

O Lord, why do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me? Psalm 88:14

We all have times when we feel forsaken and at our lowest. There is nowhere to go for help, our prayers seem like unheard wisps that evaporate on the air when they are uttered. What can we do in such times?

Sometimes we just need a reminder that God is there. The Psalms do not end with chapter 88, God has much more to say to us.   Psalm 91 is a good reminder of His love and protection for His own:

For Jehovah is my refuge! I choose the God above all gods to shelter me. How then can evil overtake me or any plague come near?  For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go.  They will steady you with their hands to keep you from stumbling against the rocks on the trail.  You can safely meet a lion or step on poisonous snakes, yes, even trample them beneath your feet!

 For the Lord says, “Because he loves me, I will rescue him; I will make him great because he trusts in my name.  When he calls on me, I will answer; I will be with him in trouble and rescue him and honor him.  I will satisfy him with a full life and give him my salvation.” Psalm 91:9-16

D minor days come to everyone. There are many reasons to feel sadness in this world. But God will take care of those who love and trust in Him. Even His angels watch over them. Are you feeling sad today? Perhaps you have experienced a deep loss, or you have an unfulfilled hope. In your sadness, remember whose company you’re in, the authors of the bible who also faced trouble and heartache, pouring their hearts out within its chapters, and the great composers of sad music who poured their hearts out on pages of musical notes, and remember that God sees your tears and loves you!
