No Spectacles Faith

With some of our historical figures, fact and legend are intermingled. John Hancock is one of those figures in American history. Hancock was a wealthy man through inheritance, born in Massachusetts and orphaned as a young boy before his successful uncle took him in. He later attended Harvard College, graduating at 17. He traveled to England on business and witnessed the coronation of a king. And John Hancock always supported breaking free from English rule.

It is legend that says that when John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, put his signature on that treasured document he made sure that the British Ministry could read it without their spectacles. His was also the largest signature on the Declaration of Independence.

Do you ever feel like God needs spectacles to see your faith in Him? All of us struggle with our faith in God at some time, it only grows as we experience trials and see God working everything together for our good. The bible even says that those trials, when we let them, produce a faith more precious and valuable to God than gold, a faith that will bring us honor when Christ returns:

These trials are only to test your faith, to see whether or not it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests gold and purifies it—and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold; so if your faith remains strong after being tried in the test tube of fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day of his return. 1 Peter 1:7

Whether you are strong in your faith, or find yourself in a struggle to believe, with a faith only strong spectacles would reveal, God is with you in your journey. And when you have stood the test, you will have that strong faith that God calls precious.
