How to Break a Generational Curse

In my previous article I wrote about the reality of generational curses. A generational curse is a sinful action, harmful practice, or destructive influence that is passed through the family line from one generation to the next. Often times, there are evil spirits involved in these curses that help perpetuate the cycle of darkness.

As I have ministered in the area of deliverance from evil spirits, sometimes it has been imperative to break a generational curse when setting someone free. If you recognize the influence of a generational curse—or if the Holy Spirit reveals one to you—here are some key steps in breaking free.

1. Recognize the provision of the cross

All deliverance ministry, including breaking generational curses, is an act of enforcing what Jesus has already accomplished on the cross. Galatians 3:13-14 says this: “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

Jesus has already paid the price for our deliverance. We don’t earn our freedom; we must come to God on the basis of faith in the finished work of Christ.

2. Renounce the sins of previous generations

Take time to pray out and renounce the specific sins and curses that are relevant to you and your family line. Here is a sample prayer that you can use to look to Jesus and renounce a curse:

Lord Jesus, thank You for dying on the cross and becoming a curse, so that I could be redeemed from every curse and receive God’s blessing. Because of Your finished work, I ask you to set me free from every curse that is over my life. I declare that the blood of Jesus separates me from the sins of past generations. I renounce these sins and break away from any generational curse that is over my life. Specifically, ________________________…

Fill in the blank with the specific sins and curses you want to break. Command any evil spirits that are attached to these curses to go in the name of Jesus.

3. Receive the blessings of being a child of God

As children of God, we inherit His blessings. Notice that the end result of Christ’s work in freeing us from the curse is to bestow blessings on us: “that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (Galatians 3:14).

Find the blessings that are outlined in the Scripture and receive them into your life. Welcome the Holy Spirit to fill you and replace each curse with a blessing. You no longer have to live under the influence of any sinful or destructive patterns from previous generations. And instead of passing on curses to your children, you will pass on blessings!

  1. I have read your post. I am praying that what i believe has cursed 4 generations of women in my family will be gone. My Great Grandmother, Grandmother, Mother and her sister, as well as my sister and my female cousins have all had failed marriages and I haven’t been married at all and I am about to be 39. My G.G., and Grandmother passed away unmarried, my mother seems to be in the same path as well as the other females in my family listed. I can only come to the conclusion that it’s a generational curse and scares me as we are all strong independent women but doesnt mean that there isn’t a life long love for all of us. I feel as if something is blocking or destroying this for us. In Jesus name I pray for my family and the release from any and all curses, fill us with blessings and to have this love that we all deserve to have.

    • Hi Angela i read your post on tblfaithnews and im passing through a similar cicumstance. Im turning 38 thisnyear and unmarried. In my own case i noticed that at least one woman from my father’s lineage dont marry and the ones that married got married to men that dont quite suit their class. My cousins mostly female too are unmarried except for one ot my father’s sisters that married outside my tribe. I am not keeping tabs to know how the marriage of her daughters has fared. I am writing first to commiserate with you on the circumstances we find ourselves in and to ask if youater found spiritual assistance to help you out of your situation. Thanks. Marcia

  2. I have been looking and searching for answers about my families history for years. Some information that l learned was horrible, hurtful and I was stunned and perplex. (I was reunited with a half sister after 30 years.) My Aunt shared a lot of information after this 1/2 Sister who resurfaced…I think my family should have shared this information and not let all that time go by. I found out about this and the family. I am now able to see why my family hid allllll these SECRETS. I have been fighting and battling their Demons.. I thank God who saved me ….Thank you JESUS .. Who is my Father….who died for me on the cross…….(still no one came forward to share this information in my family)

Great to read your post and believe a new day has come for you in the name of Jesus Christ. I am standing with you and trusting God for your total deliverance. Amen

  3. I have read your post keenly and have really been inspired. I am now clocking 40years old, the only university graduate in the family but still not stable career-wise. My education was wholly financed by my mother because she separated from my dad thus l have never lived with my dad and l didn’t know the kind of person he was till he passed away in August 2013. I received the shocking news from one of my uncle, brother to dad, that my dad was a very polite man but his politeness was not constructive. Besides, my dad was a spoiler to every job he landed. This is pure generational curse haunting me also presently. Luckily, through Jesus Christ, our Savior, l pray and renounce these sins and break away from any generational curse that is over me. THANK you JESUS.
