Unbroken, Brothers In Christ.

I wanted to take a little bit to highlight the importance of brotherhood. And by brotherhood I mean your brothers in Christ. This all also applies to women and their sisters in Christ. I love this set of verses from Ecclesiastes. I think it highlights well why we need our Brothers and sisters in Christ and why we should keep them close.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12  Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Our Brothers and sisters in Christ are not necessarily people that are related to us. But we share a common bond in Christ. If we are in Christ we each have the hope of him saving us and redeeming us. Saving us from our sins and redeeming us to the father. Having brothers in Christ that will have you back in a fight, be it spiritual or literal, is priceless.

Forming strong bonds with one’s brothers and sisters in our faith is crucial. As we see here in these verses in Ecclesiastes having someone close by to lift you up when you fall or to warm you when it’s cold is of great importance.

This brings to mind Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

God, knowing everything, saw the need for the man to have someone else close to him. In this instance it was a woman. To help work in the garden. Here is another verse that goes well with the verses in Ecclesiastes.

Proverbs 18:1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

This passage affirms the notion that two are better than one. When man is by himself his desires will ultimately be for his own self interests. Or he’ll meddle in others affairs where he is not wanted or needed. Or sometimes he meddles in wisdom. Meaning he doesn’t seek true wisdom he only seeks his own selfish wisdom. Lacking other people to check him his wisdom lacks a vetting process that uses other God fearing men to check his thoughts.

I think you will find that you will have multiple brothers who make up your duo. By this I mean you might have one brother you go to with a marital problem. Or another you confide in with a specific sin problem. I am lucky enough to have several men that God placed in my life to help me in the problems/trials I’ve come to and through. Hopefully you can find a group of men who are interdependent with the variety of problems you come across in your walk. And I pray that you would have the courage to lean on them in your trials and tribulations.

  1. Hello Matthew,

Excellent article nicely stated and of immense importance. With God foremost in our corner and in our lives, we need sisters/brothers who support and garner understanding, and walk in accordance with love of Christ, and whom we can bond with in all aspects of our lives, through thick and thin.

Thanks for sharing this timely message with us.

    God Bless you~
