Faith in the Deep

Hillsong United; a spirit led group that has the anointing of God all over it. This is confirmed in the songs they sing. As written on their website, www.hillsongunited.com, the Australian band’s mission is “To create songs that will awaken both individuals and churches to the fact that we’re redeemed and called into the story of God.” Members of the group include Joel Houston, Jonathon Douglas, Matt Crocker, Benjamin Tennikoff, and Micheal Fragar.

My first interaction with this group was through their hit song that made number one on the American Billboard Christian Songs Chart. Their song “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” is truly inspirational and thought-provoking. After hearing it, my response was total praise and adoration to God. I can relate to the words. I too want to surrender all to God and trust him in lives’ deep unknown.

Oceans was inspired by the Bible story of Peter walking on water (Matthew 14: 22-33). Peter trusted God, and was doing a great job of walking on water. All this changed however, when he took his eyes off Jesus and allowed the fear of his surrounding to weaken his faith in Christ.

“You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find you in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand”

Sometimes we put limits on God. Most of the time it’s not intentionally, nevertheless, we occasionally do. But I pray that we’ll truly learn to take the boarders off God’s capability. If we say he’s in control—and not riding in the co-pilot’s seat, then we should really allow him to soar into heights unknown in our lives. Recklessly trust him and your faith with grow.

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without boarders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever you would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wonder
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my savior”

To be able to pen words so artistically in a song is truly a gift, and I am touched by their compilation of Oceans. May God continue to bless them as they bless the nation.
