Saving Lives Is Jesus’ Forte

Superbowl commercials have gained a large audience over the years and 2010 was no exception.  People – lots of people – were watching.  The difference this particular year was that Focus On The Family had scheduled a rare “pro-family” commercial to be aired.  As news got out, the commercial was unofficially dubbed an “anti-abortion” commercial by various media sources.  It outraged many abortion rights groups.

As God would have it, the commercial aired despite media opposition.  Traffic to Focus On The Family’s website spiked.  It seemed this simple commercial was creating a national controversy.  By divine design, pregnant and unwed Susan soaked in the message of that commercial about the importance of family.  An internal conflict battled within her over the message of life she had heard and the demands of her boyfriend to have an abortion.  The reference to a “miracle baby” kept looping through her mind.  She connected several times with a counselor at Focus and made the decision to carry her baby to full term.

Focus On The Family reconnected with Susan this year and created a short video of the mother-daughter relationship.  Susan expressed how thankful she is for her beautiful daughter, Avita, now three.  She spoke of how they “do everything together” and work as a team since “one person can’t do it all.”  They enjoy much of the fun of past times…putting up Christmas lights, baking cookies, doing crafts…they spend a lot of time together.  But, even though Susan finds being a single mom exhausting, she explains it is well worth the effort.  She would “do anything” for her daughter.

Susan shared how that Avita’s presence has definitely blessed her life.  She delights in seeing Christmas through her three-year old child’s eyes.  “She brings out the best in me,” says Susan.  “I can’t imagine life without her.  She has even brought me closer to Jesus.  We will have each other no matter what.”

God sent His son, Jesus, to defeat the enemy’s plan to kill, steal, and destroy.  (John 10:10)  Jesus thwarted Satan’s plan to kill Avita.  Even though we don’t know God’s plans for Avita’s life, we do know He didn’t want her to die in her mother’s womb through the act of abortion. (Proverbs 16:9)  Jesus longs to be real to Avita as much as He longs to be real to you and me.  He wants to move in and through Avita’s life and in ours.  As Jesus seeks you out, allow him to save you from any plans of destruction the Deceiver has for your life.  Grab hold of Jesus’ hand, accept His atoning work on the cross for your sin, then stand forgiven and ready to make the difference you are here to make for His glory.  Let Jesus work His saving miracle in your life, too.  It’s His forte.
