Prophecies from the Old Testament fulfilled in the New Testament is one major proof of the inspiration of the Bible. The book of Isaiah is the most significant. It contains more prophecies about the coming Messiah than any other prophetic book, and is the second most quoted Old Testament book in the New Testament. David Limbaugh, in his book, The Emmaus Code, Finding Jesus in the Old Testament, lists 35 prophecies from Isaiah fulfilled in the New Testament.
Isaiah is not only the center of these prophecies, but it is a pivotal book for the entire Bible. It shows that the Bible is divinely inspired not only in its contents, but also in its format. “The book of Isaiah, located in the center of the Bible, can be seen as a microcosm of the Bible in that it contains sixty-six chapters (The Bible has sixty-six books), and the first thirty-nine chapters (the same number of books of the Old Testament) focus on judgment and condemnation. The last twenty-seven chapters, like the New Testament’s twenty-seven books, deal mostly with redemption. Additionally, the first thirty-nine chapters of Isaiah correspond with the Old Testament in pointing to the coming Messiah. The last twenty-seven chapters parallel the New Testament in dealing with the Messiah and his messianic kingdom.” (1)
It is impossible for such a thing to happen without divine inspiration. II Peter 1:2o-21 says, “Know this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
Because the Bible is divinely inspired its message must be taken seriously. The central message is that humanity is in a fallen state in need of forgiveness and redemption. Jesus is that one and only person in all of history who offers forgiveness and redemption to those who call upon him for their eternal salvation. Jesus fulfilled dozens of prophecies. In a previous article, I mentioned that the odds of one person fulfilling all these prophecies is compared to the State of Texas being covered with silver dollars. One of those silver dollars has a special marking on it. A blindfolded person is sent out to find that one specially marked silver dollar the first time.
One’s eternal destiny is found in the Bible, depending upon what a person decides to do in response to the claims Jesus made about himself.
- “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me”(John 14:6).
- ” I am the light of the world (John 8:12), and the living water” (John 11:14).
- “ I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live”(John 11:25).
Choose Jesus and then read His inspired word that is as applicable today as it was when it was written thousands of years ago. Its eternal message has never changed throughout all the centuries and generations of humanity.
